Loyd re-signs with FC Dallas

Zach Loyd

Zach Loyd has spent his entire career at FC Dallas, and that will not be changing any time soon.

FC Dallas announced Thursday that they have re-signed Loyd to a new deal that will keep him at the club that drafted him back in 2010. Loyd’s contract expired following the 2013 season, but FC Dallas tendered a bona fide offer to him late in the year and the two parties eventually agreed to terms.

“It was always a priority for FC Dallas to sign Zach to a new agreement,” said FC Dallas technical director Fernando Clavijo in a prepared statement. “It was not until the season was over that we started to make progress. Zach has been a big part of FC Dallas for the last four seasons and we are ecstatic to have him back.”

The 26-year-old Loyd, who was drafted fifth overall by FC Dallas in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft, started 24 of the 25 matches he played in during the 2013 campaign. He has three goals and seven assists in 111 career games in MLS.

Happy to see Loyd returning to FC Dallas? Do you see him having a strong 2014 season? What area should FC Dallas focus on now?

No. He’s good enough and can play left and right back. Witness his one and only performance against Chile in which he was stellar. But I doubt we’ll ever see him in a USMNT again unless we discover he is eligible to play for Lichtenstein and then everyone will be saying “cap him now”.

What happened to him? You mean, besides becoming one of the most reliable outside backs in the league, averaging almost 30 appearances a season since he was drafted, getting a few looks from the USMNT and generally being regarded as an all around great dude…

Granted, 2013 was a down year by his standards, and Accosta’s emergence didn’t help his cause much. But he’s still 26 and has plenty left in the tank at either RB or LB, and he’s versatile enough to move around and contribute elsewhere on the field if the team feels Accosta is the long term answer at RB.

If you want to hold not breaking into the National Team picture as a knock on him, fine. If there was ever a year he had a shot, this was it and he was unfortunately in the worst form of his pro career. But purely from an FCD perspective? The dude has more than justified his draft position and likely still has a long career ahead of him (standard injury caveats apply). He’s just a solid all around MLS pro.

He’s also had some unfortunate injury concerns, though not as bad as George John. Add to that the fact Dallas has had 2 bad seasons in a row.

The kid is good and needs to be in the national team picture. He is an extremely solid option at right back.
