Report: De Rosario to sign with Toronto FC

Dwayne De Rosario

Dwayne De Rosario is heading home.

De Rosario is apparently set to sign a new contract with Toronto FC this week, according to a report out of Canada.

De Rosario had been selected by TFC in the second stage of the Major League Soccer re-entry draft last month, but his addition to the squad was never quite assured.

The new contract brings him back to a team where he’s the leading scorer, but it remains to be seen how influential or utilized he will be this time around.

De Rosario had been traded away in 2010 after scoring 15 of TFC’s 33 goals that year. He ended up in D.C. United where he finished 2011 with the Golden Boot as the top scorer in MLS. In October, United had declined to pick up an option with the Canadian national team striker.

TFC had said after drafting him that they were looking to drive a hard bargain and pay him far less than the whopping $654,300 he made last year with United. De Rosario tallied three goals and two assists in 24 appearances for United in 2013.

De Rosario’s signing is the latest in a slew of moves by TFC. Brazilian striker Gilberto will join as a designated player with England and Spurs striker Jermain Defoe will supposedly join during the January transfer window.

What do you think of De Rosario returning to Toronto? Will he be able to light up the scoreboard for TFC once more? Is this a good move for TFC?

  1. I hope he plays 30 games as a 60′ minute Sub. I love me some DeRo and wish him all the best.

My Value for Money Rating for a “Just Shy of DP” Contract is:
    8 Goals and 4 Assist

  2. I think De Rosario has been a much maligned player. He has been MVP with Houston and when he played for Toronto FC he was the highest scorer for TFC and a ‘fan favourite’ at BMO.
I personally feel he has much to give to this city and I wish him the very best.

  3. I wouldn’t be surprised if what ever deal they agree on is heavy with performance bonuses. Games played, goals and assists made. If he plays and does well makes more money.

    • DeRo actually played for FSV Zwickau of the Regionalliga Nordost (4th division). But to answer your question more directly, he was a key cog in the Quake/Dynamo dynasty of the 00s at the prime age for Euro-moves. By the time he was traded from Houston and started his MLS transient phase, he was 30. Every year teams bet against him and until last year he proved them wrong. If everyone thinks you’re about to go over the hill that’s probably not your Euro-transfer period anymore.

    • Simply put. He wanted to win championships. He was easily good enough to compete and play in Europe on a middle tier team like a Everton in the EPL or a Schalke 04 in the Bundesliga. He would have played plenty for those teams in his prime and had a good career but 0 titles to show for it.

And for those that say he couldn’t have just look at what he did internationally for Canada where he was always an influential player in any of Canada’s matches vs top competition.

He enjoyed MLS and will go down as one of its most influential and best ever players. Won 4 MLS Cups, U.S. Open Cup, Supporters Shield, MLS Cup & league MVP not to mention several all star games and the league all time best XI.

I think he had a great career and hope he gets to help lead Toronto to the playoffs for the first time ever. It would be a nice end to his career!
