The Canadian Women’s National Team won’t have to wait very long for a chance at revenge against the U.S. Women’s National Team.

On Monday, the Canadian Soccer Association (CSA) announced that Canada will face the USWNT in a friendly match on May 8 at Investors Group Field in Winnipeg. It’s the first time since 1990 that the Canadian WNT has played in the capital of Manitoba. Winnipeg is one of the six host cities for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The match falls on one of FIFA’s international dates, meaning that the entire USWNT player pool is available for selection.

“Every time we come into these games against USA, we want to be the team that stops them, stops their unbeaten streak,” Canada’s WNT head coach John Herdman said in a statement. “They’re an absolute machine but at some point someone’s going to trip them up. We are hoping that with our fans behind us and cheering us on, we can do that in Winnipeg in May.”

Last Friday, the USWNT defeated Canada, 1-0, at Toyota Stadium in Dallas, behind a goal from Canadian-born forward Sydney Leroux. The win moved the U.S. to 47-3-5 all time against Canada.

The stadium, Investors Group Field, is a 33,422 capacity stadium with room to expand to 40,000 that opened in 2013. It’s currently used by the Canadian Football League’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the University of Winnipeg Bisons football team, and the Winnipeg Rifles of the Canadian Junior Football League.

The USWNT last played in Canada on June 2, 2013 at BMO Field in Toronto, with the U.S. winning 3-0 thanks to two goals from Alex Morgan and one from Leroux.

Up next for the USWNT is a pair of matches against Russia. First, the U.S. takes the field on Saturday in Boca Raton, Fla. and then on Feb. 12 the USWNT meet Russia again for a friendly match at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

  1. This rivalry has been going on since Mia Hamm days, not just from the past Olympics like it seems is reported, although I’m sure it went up a notch or two. Always a hard fought match.

  2. Is Canada’s only goal to schedule every possible friendly against the US and dream it as ‘the rematch’ only to loose at the mercy of Sydney leroux

    • The Canadians have been giving the USA good games as of late so why not schedule more of them? It’s a pity that North America only has 2 decent teams. It would be great if Mexico improved to the point that they could give the USA a run for their money on a consistent basis. What the Canadians should do is host a mini cup tournament in the Summer and invite some good competition (sort of like the 1993 USA cup) and invite some other teams.
