Chivas USA picked up a 2-1 come-from-behind victory Sunday over conference foes Colorado Rapids behind a pair of penalty conversions from Erick Torres and Adolfo Bautista.
The Rapids opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a goal from Deshorn Brown. The 23-year-old Jamaican got on the end of a Dillon Serna pass before firing past Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy.
Chivas USA equalized just three minutes later from the spot, as Matthew Fondy was taken down in the box while making a run towards goal. Torres stepped up and calmly delivered, leveling the score at 1-1.
The Goats scored from the penalty spot once again in the 83rd minute, as Bautista, who came on for Torres earlier in the second half, placed his penalty just inside the left post. The goal proved to be Bautista’s second game-winning-goal of the preseason.
Here are some other preseason results from the weekend:
LEWIS GIVES WHITECAPS 1-0 VICTORY OVER UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA
After an offseason of headlines involving the New York Cosmos, Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Andre Lewis scored for his new team Sunday, as the Whitecaps won their annual preseason contest with the University of Victoria by a score of 1-0.
Lewis was chosen in the first round in this year’s MLS SuperDraft, but the U-20 Jamaican international had previously signed with the Cosmos. However, the Cosmos’s agreed to loan Lewis to the MLS side in late January, in a move that benefited the Whitecaps Sunday.
Lewis scored a 90th minute winner off of an Omar Salgado cross. Salgado found Lewis hovering around the back post, and the Jamaican put it in with only seconds remaining in the match.
GOALS FROM SARVAS, ZARDES GIVE GALAXY CENTRAL CALIFORNIA CUP
The LA Galaxy knocked off rivals San Jose Earthquake 2-1 Saturday to win the inaugural Central California Cup on Saturday behind a pair of finishes from Marcelo Sarvas and Gyasi Zardes.
Sarvas had a 30-yard strike saved in the 18th minute, but the Earthquakes couldn’t keep the 32-year-old off the scoresheet for much longer. Sarvas gave the Galaxy the lead in the 31st, as the Brazilian smashed home a pass from compatriot Samuel.
Zardes scored the Galaxy’s second in impressive fashion in the 54th, as the 22-year-old dribbled past a trio of Earthquake defenders before finding the upper corner from just outside the box.
“After I scored the goal, I thought that I’ve done what the coaches expect out of me. I pushed [the ball] past the defenders, I glanced at the goalkeeper and just placed the shot,” Zardes said according to the Galaxy’s official site. “It just felt good that it all came together as opposed to last season.”
San Jose pulled one back in the 69th minute through academy defender Josh Morton, but couldn’t find the much-needed equalizer.
DYNAMO TAKE OUT SMU
The Houston Dynamo took down NCAA Division 1 program Southern Methodist University, 2-0, on Saturday with goals from Brad Davis and Sito Seoane in a preseason scrimmage in Houston.
Trialist Seoane gave his side the lead in the 15th minute from the penalty spot after Omar Cummings was taken down inside the box.
The lead was doubled by Davis in the 58th, as the United States Men’s National Team midfielder was able to place a Will Bruin assist into the back of the net. Next up for the Dynamo is an exhibition match on Wednesday against their USL Pro affiliate, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.
