For the first time since 2011, Manchester United will travel to the U.S. for a preseason tour.

The reigning English Premier League champions announced on Tuesday that they will be heading across the pond to “visit a number of destinations,” though full details of the tour will be announced at a later time.

“I’m delighted to announce that the team will be returning to the USA for our 2014 Tour, presented by Aon,” Manchester United Group managing director Richard Arnold said in a statement. “Since the Club’s last visit in 2011, the appeal of football in America has grown rapidly. NBC reported that this season’s Barclays Premier League opening weekend saw the average viewership rise by 78% from the 2012/13 season, with Manchester United’s match against Swansea being the most-watched game.”

“Manchester United has over eight million followers in the United States and the 2014 Tour presents an exciting opportunity for these fans to get up close to the club they love.”

When Man United last came to the USA in 2010 and 2011, they faced the MLS All-Stars in both years as well as playing a handful of games against MLS teams and even Barcelona in 2011.

  1. I still can’t believe Klopas subbed Johnson, his starting keeper, at the half when the Fire were beating United in front of 60,000 fans.

Of course if they come to Chicago I’ll be there.

  2. I love Manchester United and have been a hard core fan since I was a kid back in Africa. I will always love them but these summer tours get in the way of my MLS season. Sorry but the bucks go to the United of the DC variety.

I will watch them on TV though and wish them happy touring.

    That’s a big bandwagon.

    • I think our All-Stars will have a hard enough time dealing with Bayern Munich. No way they can stand up to both Bayern and Man U at the same time!

      • After the exodus of players that is likely to occur after this awful s season, I’m thinking Chivas USA could take United this summer.

      • Not at all. United is realistically looking at a sixth or seventh place finish in the league this year. No better. Nth at means no UCL next season unless they win it this season, which is not going to happen barring a series of disasters befalling the other 15 teams in the knockout round.

No UCL football next year, no RVP and others, who will run for the exit doors. The tactics of David Moyes may have been appropriate at Everton, but they are not at ManU. He needs to go, now.
