Soccer Wednesday: Your Running Commentary

Cristiano Ronaldo may be suspended for the next three La Liga matches, but he’s in the starting lineup for today’s Madrid derby clash with Atletico Madrid.

Though Real Madrid has historically owned this rivalry, Atletico have had the upper hand over the last 12 months, including defeating Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in last year’s Copa Del Rey final. As the teams face in the first leg of this year’s Copa Del Rey semifinals, league leading Atletico will be looking to extend their neighbor’s misery.

For most clubs, a loss or two is nothing to worry about, but at Barcelona it’s been deemed a crisis. Under manager Gerardo Martino, the club have not always played their best soccer and suffered an embarrassing loss at home to Valencia last Saturday. The Catalonian club have a shot at redemption against Real Sociedad on Wednesday as they look to stay alive in the trophy hunt.

Elsewhere on Wednesday, AS Roma hosts Napoli in the Coppa Italia, Botafogo host Peruvian side Sporting Cristal in Copa Libertadores action, and Pachuca takes on Altamira in the Copa MX.

  1. Sociedad playing a flat back FIVE. Not sure if I have ever seen that before… Pretty obvious they are playing for the tie in the first leg. Honestly can’t blame them though; they’ve had some pretty meaningful counters so far but I think Barca end up winning this one 3 or 4 to nothing.

    • What just happened? Vela gets dragged down in the box…. but not even a Pen.
Then a goal for Barca and a magic Red card against Sociedad?

  2. dang, Lichaj still not in the 18. that injury just won’t go away i guess. it was a “minor” injury but it’s been almost a month.

  3. I’m watching the Real Madrid vs. Athletico Madrid and it is one dirty game. Pepe has to be the dirtiest player in the game today. He is definitely a loose canon and I can see him getting a red card in the group stages of the World Cup.
