For Tim Howard and Everton, Tuesday could not have been much been better.

The Toffees leapfrogged Tottenham and further solidified their place in next season’s European competition by going on the road and picking up a 3-0 win against Newcastle United. Howard made three saves to help post his 11th clean sheet of the campaign. Everton also benefited from Manchester United dropping points to Manchester City. The Toffees now have a six-point lead over the Red Devils, who are looking to avoid the disaster that would be missing out on Europe.

Oguchi Onyewu also helped his club post a shutout victory. Onyewu started and went the distance for Sheffield Wednesday in a 1-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion that came as a result of a second-half stoppage-time goal. The win was the Owls’ third in their last four league matches and raised them into 13th place in the Championship.

Fellow center back John Brooks also saw substantial playing time, as he got the nod for Hertha Berlina despite being part of a defense that conceded three goals over the weekend. Brooks and Hertha once again surrendered three goals on Tuesday, but this time it came in a 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich that clinched the Bundesliga title for the German powerhouse two months before the end of the season.

What do you think of these performances? Do you see Howard and Everton finishing the season with a European berth? Like what you saw from Brooks against Bayern Munich?

  1. There’s a reason Gboly Ariyibi did not dress for Leeds United yesterday. He has been loaned to Tranmere in League One for the rest of the season and played 48 minutes for them.

  2. I might be wrong, but don’t fifth AND sixth place in the Premier League this year get a ticket to the Europa League? The winners of the League Cup usually get a Europa League pass, but since Man City is (essentially) guaranteed a Champions’ League place, the next best team would take their place and play Europa League.

  3. Brooks starting to look a little better in each start. Reacting instead of just watching everything develop in front of him. Seemed to read the game better in the second half. Stepped in to break up a few things and had a couple solid challenges. A work in progress but going in the right direction I’d say. No doubt the best team any American center back will see this year anyway.

    • Interesting situation to say the least. Obviously him and gooch were garbage vs ukraine, but besler and (particularly) gonzo still have questions abound. Does JAB’s Ukraine performance get a slight pass given he hadn’t been receiving a lot of playing time if he finishes out the rest of the season with 90 minute performances and we see him get one more look in May? Or do we forget about it because need every last second of those friendlies to shore up Gonzo/Besler?
