FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Part of the defensive solidarity seen in the New England Revolution’s scoreless tie against the Vancouver Whitecaps came with the return of the team’s captain Jose Goncalves, who was left off the game day roster in last weekend’s 1-0 loss in Philadelphia to the Union.

At the moment, Goncalves and the team have hashed out their differences over a contract dispute and he has been given the captain’s armband again.

“[Goncalves’s] back. He’s back in the line-up. He’s back serving as our captain. And we move forward and he’s ready to go,” Revolution General Manager Mike Burns told the media before Saturday’s game.”

Goncalves had reported split with the team after being given an ultimatum by Revs head coach Jay Heaps to focus and stop letting his contract situation serve as a distraction. Goncalves proceeded to sit out New England’s loss to Philadelphia last week.

Goncalves was happy to be back on the field again and playing and told the media after the game he’s focused again.

According to Burns, the dispute is behind the team and after some conversations between the team, the coaches, Goncalves and his agent, everything is behind them.

“We feel we’re all at a much better spot now and we’re ready to put that all behind us and his focus now is concentrating on helping us win games,” said Burns.

“We think he’s [Goncalves] very happy and hope is very happy and hope he is going to be here for a while,” he continued.
