SBI MLS Player of the Week: Bernardo Anor

The Columbus Crew have a new head coach, and several new faces, but it has been many of the returning players who have stepped up to help the team get off to a good start.

Count Bernardo Anor among that group. The young midfielder has stepped in nicely to help fill the void left by the retirement of Eddie Gaven, and his two goals on Saturday not only helped the Crew post an impressive 2-1 win against the Philadelphia Union. They also helped Anor earn SBI MLS Player of the Week honors.

Anor beat out a field of Player of the Week candidates that included Dillon Powers, Mauro Diaz and Lamar Neagle.

What did you think of Anor’s performance? Which MLS player impressed you the most last weekend?

Eddie Gaven has fallen off the grid, and I think that is his intention. Within 10 days of announcing his retirement the Columbus Dispatch Printed this:

“After announcing his retirement on October 31, he didn’t respond to interview requests and by November 8th he had emptied his Columbus Condo and there was a For Sale sign in the yard.”

Adding to the speculation about where Eddie Gaven has gone was his answer to In a 2012 interview with the Columbus Dispatch about what he would do if he wasn’t playing soccer…

CD: If you weren’t playing soccer, what would you be doing with your life?

EG: “I think I’d really like to be a farmer. I know that sounds random. I’d like to have my own house on the farm, grow my own crops, live off the land and get off the grid. The problem is I don’t think my wife is on board with this idea but I hope she slowly comes around to it. It’s something I might look into when I’m done playing soccer. Maybe I’d be doing that.”

Columbus resident here. Former Crew goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum did an interview before he moved to KC and said that Gaven was looking forward to moving “off the grid” in his retirement. Don’t think hemeant living in the woods with no electricity, but I got the impression that Gaven is looking forward to a quiet post-soccer retirement with his family.

Like Moreno on ESPN FC would say, Anor’s second goal was a little on the filthy side.
