Just a matter of days before the start of the 2014 Major League Soccer season, the New York Red Bulls received a shock that made waves across the country.
Citing personal reasons, Red Bulls general manager Jerome de Bontin announced his resignation on Monday. A search for the next Red Bulls GM is underway.
“My assignment upon becoming General Manager of the Red Bulls was to help the club further increase its relevance in the tri-state area,” de Bontin said in a statement. “We wanted to improve our performance both on and off the field so that our loyal fans as well as new fans would have a club that lived up to their expectations as the best club in MLS. I wish the club and staff success in the upcoming season and the future.”
De Bontin oversaw the business and financial side of the club from October 2012 until Monday. The Red Bulls play their season opener on Saturday at the Vancouver Whitecaps.
Here are some more stories to catch you up around the league:
GALAXY, DYNAMO UNVEIL NEW UNIFORMS
Signifying the number 11, the LA Galaxy unveiled their new uniforms at 11:11am local time.
The new uniform looks nearly identical to last season’s home uniform, a white shirt with a blue sash diagonally across the uniform. However, the sash is made of 11 separate lines, which the Galaxy say signify the starting eleven and the eleven facets of their club. The Galaxy used first team players, fans from their supporters groups, youth players, a Galaxy II player, and even Galaxy alumni to present the new uniform.
Meanwhile, the Houston Dynamo also unveiled a new uniform on Monday, showing off their secondary jerseys. Without a sponsor, it features an all-white kit with orange stripes and an orange outline, with Dynamo stitched into the back collar.
FIRE ACQUIRE COCHRANE IN TRADE WITH GALAXY
With James Riley rumored to be close to signing with the Galaxy, the team made a move to open up a roster space for him.
The Galaxy announced that they’ve sent defender Greg Cochrane to the Chicago Fire in exchange for a conditional 2016 MLS draft pick. In his first professional season in 2013, Cochrane started nine times in 12 games for the Galaxy.
“Greg is a young, versatile player with a lot of potential,” Chicago Fire head coach Frank Yallop said in a statement. “He gained valuable experience during his rookie season and we’re glad to have him join our squad to provide some additional depth.”
Mike Magee returned to the Chicago Fire after recovering from a hamstring injury and said that any rumors of him holding out due to personal reasons were just rumors. (REPORT)
MLS and Chipotle agreed a deal to make them the league’s and 12 team’s official Fast-Casual Mexican Restaurant, as well as sponsoring the first ever MLS Homegrown game during All-Star week. (REPORT)
