Williams returns to Reading with knee problem

When Danny Williams returned to Reading from U.S. Men’s National duty last week, he did so with a bit of a knee issue.

Williams rejoined the Royals last week after making a substitute appearance in the Americans’ 2-0 loss to Ukraine, but was held out of the club’s 1-1 draw vs. Brighton & Hove Albion this past weekend after it was determined that he had swelling in his knee.

“Danny (traveled) but we made the call on Saturday morning that he wasn’t going to play,” Royals manager Nigel Adkins told GetReading.co.uk. “His knee is quite swollen but hopefully that will come down. … We’ll just have to see how he reacts.”

While there is no word as to the severity of the injury or how long Williams could be out for, the knock comes at an unfortunate time for the 25-year-old midfielder. Williams had recently strung together some fine performances in the hopes of making a late push onto the U.S.’s World Cup roster.

Williams played in his first match for U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann in over a year last Wednesday, coming off the bench and contributing a solid 10 minutes in the loss vs. the Ukrainians.

What do you think of Williams having swelling in his knee? Think he will be back on the field soon? Think Williams could sneak onto the World Cup roster ahead of the likes of Kyle Beckerman if he is healthy?

Yup. The midweek 1 game international breaks are terrible. Hopefully Danny can rebound.

Mo looked pretty good in his first game back in MLS as did Beckerman. Right now id take those two plus Bradley and Jones for CM’s.

And yes the SoCal CCL matchup will be awesome!

Really optimistic about the way he has been playing. He could potentially be a starter if he keeps it up….and more importantly if Jurgen continues with the same formation despite it not fitting the personnel .

He was fun to watch but was coming into the game late in a lost cause and a lot of what was fun to watch was the aggressive dribbling runs forward, which might make less sense in a competitive contest where you expect more deliberate play by a DM.

Also with his history you need a few good games to wipe the slate clean.

A day or so after going 90 for Reading, Williams has to go full bore in practices in front of Klinsmann to force his way in to the lineup of a match four days after the 90. It is possibly his only chance to be considered for the USMNT going Brazil. It’s a wonder more didn’t get hurt.
