Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

John Anthony Brooks Hertha Berlin 2 (Hertha Berlin)

By FRANCO PANIZO

John Brooks’ new back tattoo was apparently not a hindrance to his performance this weekend.

Brooks gave his World Cup chances a boost on Saturday by scoring the winner and helping Hertha Berlin record a cleansheet in a 2-0 triumph over TSV Eintracht Braunschweig. The goal was the 21-year-old Brooks’ second of the Bundesliga campaign and first since he hit home the winner in the season-opening 6-1 triumph over Eintracht Frankfurt back in August.

Two other German-Americans found the back of the net this weekend. Terrence Boyd bagged a brace for a second straight match to lift Rapid Vienna to a 2-1 win vs. Red Bull Salzburg and his season scoring total to 18 goals across all competitions, and Andrew Wooten also netted twice to help FSV Frankfurt knock off Energie Cottbus, 3-1. Wooten now has three goals in his last two matches.

Other notable outings came in the German Bundesliga, as Timmy Chandler made his return from injury and Joe Gyau enjoyed his league debut. Chandler started and played 45 minutes for the first time since February in FC Nurnberg’s 2-0 defeat vs. Mainz on Saturday, and Gyau played in his first Bundesliga match by contributing 21 minutes off the bench in Hoffenheim’s scoreless draw with Eintracht Frankfurt.

It was not all good news, however. Tim Howard and Everton saw their UEFA Champions League bid suffer a big blow with a 2-0 loss to Southampton on Saturday, a surprise result that came about due to two own goals. The Toffees are still just one point behind Arsenal in the standings for that Champions League qualifiers spot, but the Gunners have a game in hand.

Here is how the Americans Abroad fared this weekend:

What do you think of these performances? Did Boyd’s performance all but pencil him in for a place in Brazil this summer? Do you see Bedoya making the U.S. Men’s National Team’s World Cup roster? Think Altidore is set for a strong finish to the campaign?

  1. Hot damn, this J Brooks has some cojones! Fresh off his back tattoo and scoring goals as a Center Half… please JK, pick him, or anybody but Omar!

Quick Jozy, go get a blazing bald eagle tattoo on your entire back, with a caption that says Gus Sucks… then come off the bench and score a few!! Your country needs you!

On a serious note, does Tim Ream have the capabilities to play as a Center Half at the International level? My last memory of him in the position was getting outmuscled on a header goal at Red Bull Arena against Ecuador. It sucked. To add insult to injury, there were more Ecuadorian fans than Mericans. Not the best atmosphere for a USMNT match!!!

  2. Allow me to start the brush fire: What is the deal with AJ’s form? He’s lost it. When is the last time that guy scored?

    Reply
    • I’ve been thinking the same thing: Is his mid-fielders struggling? … has he picked up a minor injury that’s slowed him down? … have opponents figured out his game or paying extra attention to him while his teammates haven’t picked up the slack? … or is it just that his chances simply haven’t been there this half the season?

      Reply
      • I think he’s just hit a wall, and needs a break. AZ kind of ran him into the ground, as he’s seen more then twice as many minutes this year then in any of his previous seasons. He’s getting looks and was even in on goal yesterday but that same sharpness, and foot work just isn’t the there right now. What does this mean going into a World Cup I’m not sure.

      • They did played a lot of Games. They went really far into the Europa League and he started a lot every game he was healthy this year.

    • It just might be that AJ is human.

He had been scoring at a phenomenal rate. You guys evaluate these players on a game to game basis which is unrealistic.

The truth is that few players can keep scoring at that rate and a slow down is normal.

Plus, in spite of the fact that everyone on SBI thinks Dutch defenders are useless, they actually aren’t and eventually most every attacker gets figured out.

  3. Let’s hope Klinsmann can work his magic in camp, because it looks like Jozy’s time is up at Sunderland. I’d be shocked if he played another minute for them.

    Reply
    • They have more than a game a week. Jozy will get some time at least to rest Wickam as is appropriate to the situation.

With Wickam scoring, there is little chance Jozy gets a start. I wish it weren’t so, but it is!

      • When you are in Sunderland’s position it is all hands on deck.

Assuming they maintain their form Sunderland look good and Jozy’s chances of getting pt seem low .

But they did not get into this position by being consistent

    • You would allow ANYTHING that Sunderland may do surprise you? There is a reason they are facing relegation, and it’s not because of their superior team management.

    • +1 I always felt he got a raw deal at St. Pauli last year under the previous coach and it shows strong character that he has kept working hard through the adversity to win a spot on senior team. His Hoffenheim contract, I think, is up either this summer or summer of 2015. Wonder if a move is in the works or better yet a contract extension.

  4. Did Danny Williams have a knock? I thought he was playing regularly and well and it seems a surprise that he didn’t play at all this weekend.

    • He’s had an injury since the last US game. It’s on a game-to-game basis. I don’t think it’s serious, just bothersome.

  5. I know Chandler only played a half, but his recovery has been miraculously fast so far.

Thoughts on him making the 30 man provisional roster? Is a month before the final friendlies long enough for him to get enough strength to challenge Evans or push Cameron inside in place of Gonzo?

    Reply
    • Biff watched the game and said he looked pretty bad, out of tempo, possibly at fault for both goals- I think off set pieces- and had to be subbed at the half.
Long way to go, short time to get there…. who knows..

I’m more curious now about Ream, he’s played a lot, apparently named MOTM last week, getting good reviews, have to wonder if worth a call into the 30 man roster

      Reply
      • we know a healthy Chandler can match Ronaldo’s speed… you dont need a whole lotta speed to play CB, I just dont know enough of Ream at LB… he might be too slow, even Fabian might have difficulty covering CR.

Tim Chandler can be make the 30 list and eventually the 23 list… really he doesnt have to play all-out til the 1st or 2nd group games… in the meantime he just needs to keep working on his regaining his form and tempo.

      • Nobody can cover Ronaldo. That guy’s on another planet right now, most marvel at his skill and shot without giving enough credit to his speed and power. To contain his chances JK should watch a replay of the Real / Bayern game and watch how Isco and Contreal handled Robben …. and then pray Portugal makes the mistake they made during much of qualifying of sitting back waiting for him to take over.

      • The man has played almost every game, and starting most of them. With an ability to play CB and left side.

      • Yea like I said the other day I’m glad someone actually watched him vs just reading about him and overstating his return just because some people are desperate to see him get into camp.
(I don’t get the Bryan reference)

      • I did not check the web site you mentioned indicating that Chandler was having a good game. that is strange. I think Saturday’s performance was the final nail in the coffin for Chandler’s chances at WC 2014. And I would imagine his Nurnberg teammates are not happy with his role in allowing those two goals, which means Nurnberg now needs not only a win Saturday against Hannover for the 16th relegation playoff spot, but also help from the soccer gods.

Chandler will have a clean slate to try for WC 2018, assuming he is willing to change his ways and put out the tremendous effort and sacrifice it takes to be an international player. As for bryan, on Saturday he warned that SBI readers should not trust my game reports on Chandler.

      • I never said he was having a good game, I just said the espn gamecast showed that he’d taken 4 of the 5 shots attempted by Nurnberg, and asked if anyone was actually watching it live. Seemed odd and desperate for them to throw him in as a starter after being out for months.

      • I didn’t say he was good. But listening to you about Chandler is like asking the tea party for an objective opinion of liberals.

He didn’t play great but give him a break. He was in fine form before the injury. And the coach said he was only gonna play a half anyway.

      • Chandler could score three goals and Biff would say he played bad. He’s been anti-Chandler for awhile.

It’s also well known that Chandler was only going to play 45 in that game. That was the plan they had. Nothing to read into about being subbed off. Other than the club wanting to make sure he didn’t re injure.

      • Is Nurnberg really in the position to be putting him in a match he can only play 45 in? Is there really time to bring him back slowly? They have 2 matches left where the best they can hope for is for a relegation playoff.

      • Not saying if it’s a good or bad idea, but that’s what they decided to do:

“Working under a pre-set minutes limit, the US World Cup hopeful nearly put his side on the board first by capping a fine team move with a drive just wide of the post on 25 minutes. Despite that highlight near miss, Chandler showed plenty of rust on the ball in his first match since February 8.”

      • Nurmberg is in the unpleasant position they are in for a reason.

Otherwise, I doubt you see Chandler on the field for any amount of time.

      • @bryan: I do try to be objective when judging performances of players. I could reply that Chandler could be responsible for allowing a team to score five goals and you would not be able to admit that he had an bad game, but would be making excuses for him and saying he generally had a decent game (and almost scored a goal), but had a few weak moments. As for the coach starting Chandler in a must-win relegation-tainted game with the plan of pulling him at half-time, sorry, I don’t believe that. Even if the coach said it after the game, which I did not see any such quotes in any news accounts, this is sometimes said after the fact by a coach to save the player embarrassment for a bad day at the office. As I noted above, I will very surprised if Chandler starts again next week after his miserable performance against Mainz.

      • That would be true if I had an obsession with him. I have no problem admitting when he plays poorly. But you actively discredit him with any chance you get. GW said it best in another thread. I’ll leave it at that.

    • If he gets minutes each week i could show that he’s healthy enough. But even that may not be enough to bring him in so late in the process.

  6. Wow Tim Ream with over 40 appearances for Bolton, a lot of 90 minute games too. Would love to know the breakdown of left-back, centerback, and center-mid he’s played. Could be the Jay Demerit of this tourney (I know Jay came up in the Confed Cup but still). At least he is playing week-in week out on defense in a good league.

Also Birmingham could go down for league 1 next year, when they were just in the play-off not too long ago. As a Fulham fan I think, if we do go down, we are more likely to end up in league 1 before we get back to the premier league. Scary times ahead.

    • Reports are that Ream will be heading to West Brom this summer. I wonder how much more likely Klinsmann would be to start him if he were on an EPL roster. Not that it would magically improve his quality, but he does seem reluctant to start players in major matches who play in Championship.

      • I did not realize this. This was reported in the Bolton newspaper weeks ago. Was this ever reported on SBI or other US soccer web sites? As for the effect on Klinsmann, what is says is that if a PL team, even a low-tier team like West Brom, likes Ream enough to shell out 4 million pounds for him, then that is a strong indication that Ream has developed into capable PL defender meaning he could be a real asset for the USMNT. I would pick Ream over John Anthony Brooks, who has been mostly bad most of the season. Brooks is too prone to mistakes and quite simply does not yet have enough international experience to be trusted in Brazil. Ream is older, had some international games in the past, and now is thriving in England. Klinsmann at the very least needs to take a close look at him in May.

      • Also if you’re just looking at either as a backup Ream being able to play left back as well as center back gives you cover in a couple spots.

      • I agree that Ream probably deserves a look and be invited to the national team’s camp, but why hate on Brooks? Brooks had injuries that caused him miss a lot of games, but he is regaining his form. He scored a goal in his last Bundesliga game, and, frankly, facing teams like Bayern or Dortmund (or even lesser Bundesliga teams) presents a different kind of challenge than facing the likes of Doncaster Rovers or Yovil Town. And, if you talk about being prone to mistakes, Ream has not exactly covered himself in glory in the USMNT’s jersey, when he had his opportunities. Having said that, I think Ream deserves a look at the camp, but he is a very long shot to make it to Brazil.

      • JK has called Ream in a number of times but each time Ream has had to beg off for one reason or another.

You can’t start a player who is not in camp.

      • false…..ream was only unable to make one call up recently and that was for the birth of his first child, which coincidently came during the call up for the Ukraine game! Other than that he’s been in camp a few times but just hasn’t seen the field for some reason! I think with the way he’s been playing you’d have to say he’s a lock for the camp and may eventually end up with a starting role, or at the very least some time in a game or two in brazil! He’s been fantastic!

      • ronniet,

Ream was called back not the fold for the Bosnia Herzegovina game. He did not get off the bench.
I don’t know if he impressed or not in camp but it was a wild and competitive game so the fact that he did not get into it does not tell me all that much.

The next group of games was the final round of WC qualifying and I would not have expected JK to call any newbies in for them.

After that there was the Nov. 15 Scotland game and the Nov. 19 Austria game. However, Bolton had four league games in November. Ream went 90 on November 9 and November 23. My suspicion is that Bolton, who won both games, was not willing to let him go.

The next games were the Korea, Ukraine and Mexico friendlies. Again you weren’t going to see any Euros in the Korea and Mexico games which left Ream with only the Ukraine game to impress. It’s unfortunate because, given how it turned out, Ream might have done really well against Ukraine. Still, at least the man has his priorities right.

His problem is that as well as he has played, he seems to be a carbon copy of Parkhurst and I can’t see displacing Michael for Timmy. Still I expect him to get called into the WC camp.

Since you seem to be a rabid Ream fan, don’t worry there is still plenty of time for someone on the US defense or midfield to get hurt.

  7. The US striker pool doing everything they can to make Klinsmann job difficult. The players you would of had going to Brazil a couple months ago have gone cold awhile a couple others have got hot. Just looking at goals in there last 10 appearances. Wondolowski – 6, Boyd – 5, Agudelo- 2, Johannsson -1, EJ- 0, Altidore -0,

    • Speaking as a Jozy supporter, I will admit not looking good and Klinsmann needs to have a strong Plan B for the World Cup roster with Jozy starting on the bench or possibly not even making the 23-man roster. I still have hopes that once Jozy gets in camp he will reclaim at last part of the good form he had last year. But, if that does not happen, then Klinsmann will have no choice to either put him on the bench or cut him from the 23-man roster. It is up to Jozy now to prove he belongs.

As for the others, my previous strong opposition to Boyd for the World Cup is starting to thaw a bit. Let’s see how he does in camp and in the friendlies. It could be that he is going to be peaking at the right time and could be Raging Bull in Brazil. As for Wondow, I will be surprised if he does not make the final 23 and I actually think there is a chance, depending on Jozy’s form, that Wondow will be starting against Ghana.

As for Johannson, I am still highly skeptical of his ability to play the international game. he has not impressed me at all, and actually looked bad IMO against Ukriane. At the current time I think he is the second most overrated player by fans on the USMNT, behind on ly Julian Green who should be in discussion for the U-21 team and for the next Olympics, not as one of 23 members of the senior team flying to Brazil.

      Reply
      • If Wondow is in the starting 11 against Ghana the US will have no chance at winning that game. He’s a very good MLS player, but not up to international standards. Not even close.

      • Wondo is actually a good choice to go against Ghana. There’s no chance we out-physical them so Wondo’s movement might be our best chance. In any case the point is null because Dempsey is the best choice to start on the point.

      • Just a silly comment. We have no chance if X player plays. I don’t care who you insert to the X spot.

      • Dude, i have faith in you. Even if you’re #13,601st on the US keeper depth chart, you might be called upon.

I’m #17,230 on the US Right back depth chart and that’s the sole reason i stay in shape. Never know when your country will need you.

      • Chicken little over here…. Just because Jozy isn’t one of the best forwards at Sunderland doesn’t mean he’s still not one of the best in our player pool. Training with an EPL team is good enough to keep him fit, he will just need a confidence boost from Klinsmann.

      • I agree that Jozy is still the best striker in the pool and I do think that rejoining his US teammates will probably help jolt him back into better form. But, it struck me over the weekend, what if Jozy is so beat down after this awful year at Sunderland and/or his bad form cannot be shaken off in USMNT camp? Then Klinsmann is going to have to make a momentous decision. As I say, I don’t think that will end up being the scenario. But if Jozy remains in awful form, then I am saying it might make sense to leave him home and replace him with a striker who is cookin’ for his club. The Group Stage of the World Cup is not the time to be playing out-of-form players in an attempt to help them regain their form. That first game against Ghana is crucial. Gotta win that one and we need a striker up top full of confidence and ready and able to take maybe that one chance for that one goal that would give us three points. I like Wondow with his chip on his shoulder to do this and shove it down the throats of all his haters.

    • First, most of these guys play in different leagues so it is a bit unfair to compare their goals total across the leagues – there is a huge gap in quality between the EPL and MLS or Austrian League. Your point would have been stronger if you compared the players who play in the same league: Wondo to EJ or Agudelo to AJ. Second, the current form is not everything – Herc Gomez was in a good scoring form at a club level in 2010, but failed to score in the three games that he played in the WC. In 1982, Paolo Rossi was in a horrendous form at the start of the WC and his coach was criticized for playing him, but Rossi ended up having a fantastic WC after Italy got out of the group stage.

  8. Any update on Beasley’s injury status yet? Good to see the Boyd staying hott this week! I’d have thought Jozy would have earned some PT this week after playing a huge role in their upset last week. What’s the deal with Kljestan? Is there something going in there? For the past few years he was a solid contributor to that team now he can barely get a sniff of action?

    Reply
    • It’s going to take a hell of a lot more than a dive for Jozy to reclaim a starting spot. As big as those thee points were last week he’s a big reason Sunderland is in the predicament they are in.

      Reply
      • I don’t disagree that he should not have been thrown right back into a starting role but some time as a 2H sub would’ve been fair IMO. That being said, blaming Jozy as a big reason Sunderland is where they are right now is a bit unfair. The team is horrendous, with or without him. Management brought in a target striker without the proper weapons around him. The guy does well when he is in the right system, ie NYRB, AZ, USMNT. I know the first 2 don’t compare to the EPL, but he has performed very well for the US against all opponents, big and small on a consistent basis.

Sunderland has been just as terrible without him in the lineup. When he is gone next year hopefully he finds a team in a strong league where he can get another opportunity to prove himself.

      • Stop with this ridiculous canard that he took a dive. There is absolutely no evidence for it and I have pointed out in previous posts how, given the run of play, it would have been highly unlikely that he took a dive.

      • +3 silly to call it a dive. To say he drew a penalty but outside of that wasn’t very effective, would have been fair.

    • Wickham is a perfect example of a striker who creates his own luck by chasing every ball down, pressuring defenders, and taking shots when possible, not trying to set up the perfect opportunity.

He’s doing everything we’ve begged Jozy to. I don’t think he’s better than Jozy but he’s playing better than him which is what counts.

      Reply
      • He hasn’t been worn out by a season of misery yet. He was off having fun the in the Championship. But blah, hes getting it done. I think he is better in the Air than Jozy and that lends itself to Sunderland.

      • I don’t think Jozy scores either of the goals Connor did this week. The header in the box, I just don’t think he beats his man too it. The second goal was a horrible give away, but Jozy rarely creates those the way Wickham did. Tough to say it, but right now Wickham would be a starter for the US national team if he were American.
