As we enter the final weekend of the 2014 Clausura regular season there are still six playoff spaces up for grabs. As one of the tightest championships in years draws to a close, Round 17 promises to provide thrilling action for fans across the country.
With potential Liguilla playoff games across the league it is difficult to choose a standout fixture. Club Leon travel to Club Tijuana, Atlas head to Tigres UANL, and Pachuca face Queretaro with all six sides still harboring ambitions of a top eight finish.
The game between Chivas de Guadalajara and Monterrey is just about the biggest fixture of the round. Both sides can still finish in the top eight, but they both lie outside those elusive places at the moment.
It is a big test for Chivas’ new coach Ricardo La Volpe, who was brought in to secure a Liguilla place but has seen them slide down the table since his arrival. Rayados were in 18th just four weeks ago, but Humberto Suazo inspired three wins and two draws from their last five outings, propelling them up the table.
If Monterrey fails to qualify it would mark their third consecutive season outside the top eight – a poor record for a club of their size. Chivas already look likely to be battling relegation next season and extra points earned now could be crucial next summer.
