By IVES GALARCEP

GLENDALE, Ariz.– The U.S. Men’s National Team take on a familiar foe tonight when arch-rival Mexico comes to University of Phoenix Stadium for a friendly that is taking on a different sort of important than past USA-Mexico matches.

Jurgen Klinsmann will be trotting out an entirely MLS-based side, with stars Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan and Michael Bradley leading the charge. Mexico is also fielding a domestic-based squad as well, with enough attacking firepower to provide a tough test for the American defense.

SBI will be providing live commentary on tonight’s match so please feel free to follow the action here. As always, you are welcome to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

Enjoy the action (Tonight’s commentary is after the jump);

      • Green had his rough moments but also seemed to settle in and make plays. he makes smart runs, darting runs. easy to see why people are excited about him. just my first time seeing him, can’t wait to see him again

  1. Bradley and Beckerman great first half, but once Mexico came with a different attack, they never adjusted. Mex consistently found space by putting someone on both sides of Beckerman, offsetting the diamond midfield. While it was super effective in the first half, it was just as ineffective in the second half. I think Beckerman is great to have as cover, but his athletic limitations scare me against Germany and Ghana. I love JJ’s hunger, athleticism and willingness to do what it takes. But he does turn the ball over a lot. I agree with Lalas, never thought i would ever say that, that the diamond won’t work n Brazil.

Good night to see different guys. Green, for an 18 year old entering in the middle of a heated rivalry for his first cap, was amazingly composed. Still made mistakes, but DEFINITELY NOT OUT OF HIS DEPTH. I Expect he will be remarkable in next few caps.

    • could have adjusted and had MB and Kyle play a flat 4 4 2, and then continue to read and react all second half in and out of the diamond (kind of like a 4 1 3 2) and the flat 4 4 2

      great first half

It’s interesting that none of you want to give Mexico any credit for the tactical changes at half time that obviously put the US on the back foot. Or for any skill and fire.

It’s also interesting that you choose to focus on the individual failures of various USMNT players rather than seeing that the team as a whole let down in the second half.

Mexico are a good team playing a home game and were embarrassed in the first half .
Did you really think they were just going to roll over and die in front of their home crowd?

This was a good game for the US. They played Mexico off the field in the first half and then withstood a ferocious second half rally where Mexico had every possibility of doing the exact same thing to the US or even more. Instead the US held them and came back to beat them 3-2 with a perfectly good very well taken goal that was not offside.
EJ is much despised and looks like garbage half the time but seems to have a knack for scoring well timed goals. I take that over a pretty boy every single time.

The lesson of this game is that the US needs keep their shape and keep the pressure on , keep moving, keep taking it to the enemy, because once they slow down and lose their shape, they are an easy target.

  2. I think we can all pretty much agree that Julian Green looked better than Berk Shea although that really isn’t saying much.

    • Can we tho? Last two times that Brek came off the bench against Mexico he created Robbie Rogers tying goal in Klinsi’s first game and created michael Orozco’s goal for our first win in Mexico. Not saying J. Green isn’t better but he did show he’s not anywhere close to a finished project. I like what I saw from him tho.

      • Came in scored the winner against Costa Rica in the Gold Cup, Also came in against Scotland and created the best chance for the US, and actually look better then a lot of players against Ukraine. It almost makes no logical since but Shea for some reason brings something off the bench.

  3. Yedlin >>> Parkhurst
When did Donovan become so slow?
    Gonzo…ugh.
    Beckerman and Bradley paired well.
    Green’s touch was nice.
    We are STACKED at GK.
EJ was miserable, except for the goal.
    I’m finally a Wondo fan.

  4. Impressive first half. Second half we looked lost. Why we believe in Gonzales I don’t know. If you look at his marking its terrible. Yedlin looked great I see him in a lower EPL team or European division soon.

  5. I was definitely in the camp that said Michael Bradley should not play every minute of every game when his dad was the coach. Clearly, I was wrong. MB by far the best player in the team. Did anybody see that casual rainbow sometime toward the end of the first half? Somewhere in midfield? I tend to agree with the Dempsey jitters; holy ßhit, Clint, enough with the flopping! Beckerman, also, I get it now. I much prefer the Torres/Feilhaber type of player, who sees the impossible hypotenuse pass, but Beckerman is built for this team: Back-pass all you want, trustafarian. Omar is slow and not intimidating; is that really the best we have? Jozy will do well with this team. Sunderland is terrible and doesn’t play to his strength. And he’s terrified of letting Kevin Bacon on the team.
I like our chances to get out of the group.

  6. my take:

Bradley had a good game but is not a creative mid. We created little from the run of play
Did Dempsey play? oh yeah, saw some dives and sock fixing
Donovan has lost a step, tried to do too much… hurt his chances
Beltran makes Evans look good he is not anywhere near ready
Omar made his usual mistakes and cost us goals
Beckerman was mostly good though lost his man on goal 2
    Zusi – did he play?
Wondo – he goes I think… has a nack of just scoring
Green – first outing so I’ll be gentile. He gets more chances but I didnt see that much… I think Juan is better than him at this point and unless he comes on strong, misses the cut
Parkhurst – solid game, helped his chances
Davis – not his best.. game seemed too fast for him

Im still concerned about the central defense. This was not a good team and we lost a two goal lead

  7. Fab J ——Gonzo/Besler/Brooks——-Cameron——Chandler/Yedlin
Parkurst is a better LB than at RB. Thoughts?

    Reply
    • Parkhurst can’t cross, he kills the attack, he doesn’t support the attack well and he’s only good on his right he kept switching to it

    • FJ must start at LB, Besler must start at LCB

RCB- who knows after this showing by gonzo

RB- should be cameron unless he’s CB, then i’m happy with Yedlin, he’s got the speed to recover more than any other RB, cameron just has better confidence in positioning but is slower

      • Yeldin looked good for his 30 mins against a Mexico B side. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves and anoint the next coming. No way he’s earned a trip Brazil, let alone a starting XI spot. Evans is the RB right now unless he blows in the lead up to the WC. LB is FJ or Beasley and CB is Belser and Gonzo/Cameron/Goodeson.

      • Yedlin looked good but the game had become a wide open end to end thing when he got on, which suits him.

I don’t think you’ll see a lot of that in Brazil.

      • Luke- you’d really like evans chance at covering a fast winger over FJ, Yedlin or even Cameron? I’d almost give Yedlin a bigger chance CONSIDERING the speed we’re gonna face. but say we start Beasley(LB) and FJ(RB), you wouldnt want Yedlin coming in for beasley, and switchin FJ over to LB?

GW- you’re right in the first part of your comment. I do think Yedlin suits the second half in a ghana matchup (more likely to become end to end wide open as you say), even possibly a portugal match up.

    • I don’t think chandler will be ready by then. And I’m
Not ready to give yedlin the spot. Cameron has to start their and hope that gonzo plays absolutely perfect every second of the World Cup. That’s the only hope we have for the back line. Scary thought, isn’t it?

      • According to reports Chandler is making really great progress and should be back at the end of april. I like cameron at CB his distribution is better than beslers and marks his man well. Yedlin and Chandler are the only ones who can keep up with CR7

    • yes! Yedlin did look good tonight. I thought Edu looked solid as well. Younger and stronger legs than beckerman (who i like).
