SBI USL Pro Power Rankings (Week 6)

USLPRo

By MIKE GRAMAJO

Orlando City SC are preparing for their jump to MLS in impressive fashion.

Despite a slow start which resulted into two draws, Adrian Heath’s squad has rapidly showed why it’s still the best side in USL Pro after four consecutive league wins that has kept them atop the standings. Orlando City won at Oklahoma City Energy FC, 2-1, last Saturday.

With Orlando City claiming the top spot, the LA Galaxy II follow at the No. 2 spot following consecutive victories over rival Orange County Blues FC. The Richmond Kickers, Dayton Dutch Lions and Sacramento Republic FC round out the top five.

While the season is rather new for all teams, there are a few that have yet to play five matches so far. Expansion side Arizona United and the Wilmington Hammerheads have each played just three matches.

Here are the SBI USL Pro Power Rankings for Week 6:

SBI USL Pro Power Rankings

1. ORLANDO CITY SC (4-0-2)

OUTLOOK – The 2013 USL Pro champions are nearly unstoppable early this season, earning all six points from a recent road trip. Midfielder Kevin Molino has led the way. The Trinidad and Tobago international scored three times during the two-game trip, twice at the FC Dallas Reserves and once at Oklahoma City Energy FC.

2. LA Galaxy II (4-1-2)

OUTLOOK – The Galaxy’s developmental squad has a game in hand over Orlando City, and is probably the only team that can go toe-to-toe against the champions. With a heavily packed squad bolstered by loans from their MLS side, Los Dos can take the fight for first place all way to the end of the season if they keep up their form.

3. RICHMOND KICKERS (2-1-2)

download (2)

OUTLOOK – The 2013 regular season champions were able to get back to winning ways, snapping their two-game winless streak last weekend after mauling the Dayton Dutch Lions on the road.

4. DAYTON DUTCH LIONS (2-2-1)

download (3)

OUTLOOK – The Dutch Lions not only suffered their biggest defeat of the season, but snapped their thee-game unbeaten streak. They’ll look to get back on track when they welcome a winless Charleston Battery to Beavercreek High School on Sunday.

5. SACRAMENTO REPUBLIC (2-3-1)

download (4)

OUTLOOK – Sacramento Republic dropped their home-opener in front of more than 20,000 fans. Preki’s team will look to rebound from its current skid when it hosts the Orange County Blues FC at Hughes Stadium.

6. ROCHESTER RHINOS (2-1-1)

download (5)

OUTLOOK – The Rochester Rhinos are arguably the most underrated team in USL Pro this season. Led by forward J.C. Banks and his three goals, the Rhinos have embarked on a three-game unbeaten streak and if Banks continues his current form, that could mean important future points.

7. ORANGE COUNTY BLUES (2-4-0)

download (6)

OUTLOOK – The Blues lost to the LA Galaxy II again last weekend, but they were able to record their largest victory of the season a few days prior, defeating the Harrisburg City Islanders 4-1 behind Jiovanni Santana and Christopher Cortez’s brace.

8. OKC ENERGY (2-3-0)

download (7)

OUTLOOK – The Energy are currently on a two-game losing streak, and have a tougher challenge on the horizon. After dropping their home-opener against Orlando City, both sides meet again this week. However, this time the Energy are the traveling team and will look to knock off the streaking Lions at a hostile venue.

9. CHARLOTTE EAGLES (2-2-0)

OUTLOOK – It’s not the best start to the season for the Charlotte Eagles, especially after dropping points at home has cost them to lag behind new-look clubs. They will look to get back on track, but their next two games are on the road.

10. HARRISBURG CITY ISLANDERS (1-2-1)

OUTLOOK – Out of their first four games, the City Islanders have only played once at home. Yet they were able to enter last Saturday’s match at Sacramento, a place packed with Republic supporters, and leave with three points. That’s something you don’t see in this league very often.

11. WILMINGTON HAMMERHEADS (1-1-1)

OUTLOOK – The Hammerheads were able to edge Arizona United for the No. 11 spot. Having scored more and conceded less than Arizona, Wilmington’s biggest test will come this weekend when they welcome the Rhinos to Legion Stadium.

12. ARIZONA UNITED (1-1-1)

download (9)

OUTLOOK – Having started the season at home, Arizona surely expected better early results. Only winning once, while conceding six goals in three games, can only mean there’s room for improvement.

– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

13. PITTSBURGH RIVERHOUNDS (0-2-3)

download (10)

OUTLOOK – Not the greatest start, but it’s only a matter of time until the team finally starting meshing. 2013 Golden Boot winner Jose Angulo has only been able to get on target two times, and their current form at home isn’t living up to expectations.

– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

14. CHARLESTON BATTERY (0-2-4)

download (11)

OUTLOOK – In 2013, the Battery only suffered defeat seven times in the regular season. Something isn’t working, whether that’s the partnership with MLS’ Vancouver Whitecaps or coaching staff, and Charleston has to get going if it wants to overcome its horrid start.

  1. Great to see the USL Pro coverage on your site. Having been a City Islanders fan since the beginning, it is unbelievable to see the growth of the league and the ever-increasing quality of play (and talent). Keep up the good work, and consider a road trip to Socceritaville this summer.

  2. Hopefully the Rhinos make it the playoffs this year – matches in Rochester in October would be an advantage against the mostly Southern teams.

  3. It’ll be interesting to see how USL Pro teams fair against MLS and NASL competition in this year’s USOC since most (all?) MLS teams have an affiliation agreement in place now. I assume the overall quality of the league has increased as more MLS-caliber players are loaned to affiliate teams. LAGII and OCSC will be especially fun to watch.
