It was a wild weekend in Major League Soccer, as a rivalry-heavy schedule produced goals galore and some truly dramatic finishes.

Episode 130 of The SBI Show takes a look back at all the crazy action, including Seattle’s stunning comeback in a 4-4 tie against Portland, FC Dallas’ romp over Houston, Toronto FC’s surprising road win in Columbus minus several starters, and more.

Co-host Garrett Cleverly and I also discuss Americans Abroad, including the latest win by Tim Howard and Everton, which saw them beat Arsenal to climb within a point of fourth place in the English Premier League.

  1. Yes Ives, though I don’t like to admit it the real test is going to be this weekend against Seattle. It’s at home, and the weather should be perfect, maybe a little windy.

If we can close down Clint, and Mauro isn’t stymied or fouled to death, I’ll be disappointed with anything but a win.

One thing I can tell you for sure after watching the SEA-POR match, Fabian Castillo is going to have a field day with Yedlin down that left side.

If Ozzie doesn’t murder Diaz, and we can keep it at least AS organized in the back (No clean sheets this season…) then I think we’ve got a real edge over Seattle.

      • Dont worry there is a 2nd hit man in Seattle now. Gonzalo Pineda formerly ( a WHILE ago) of the Mexican National Team.

  2. thank you for correcting the attribution on the brace to chara. the man is top-three defensive mid week in-week out and is the top defensive mid on any given week. beginning last year, under porter chara has been freed of trying to do the job of two or three midfielders, attacking or defensive. we’ve seen a steady stream of intelligent, accurate game-changing passes added to his top-notch defensive play. what had been lacking was a confidence to shoot and/or an accuracy of shot. I view this game as much Chara putting the team on his back as anything else. there’s not one team in MLS that wouldn’t want his services, if offered.

  3. come on now. people ‘knew’ dempsey would come around just as much as they knew jozy would come good at sunderland

    oh wait…

the dilemma moving forward is that 2 best attackers – donovan and dempsey – play the same position… and neither one is terribly effective at this point at any other position

and anyone who knew dempsey would heat up this spring knows that donovan is about to do what he does every season – completely dominate. but at this point in his career its also from a central position

so, unless you want to get creative…

…its donovan v dempsey. JK obviously likes dempsey. donovan is pretty good too

  4. o.k., Ives, it is in quotes now “LA is top 3 in MLS.” I generally trust your judgment on MLS, but want to see how this one pans out over the course of the season. I have them finishing in the top 6, based on a recent tarot card reading, but no higher.

  5. yeah, it could show you he isn’t pushing himself. then again, i also don’t have complete trust in poyet as a managerial genius. we’ll see if his 3-4-2-1 (or 5-2-2-1, or 3-4-1-2, or whatever) works.

  6. since we’re all talking about the sunderland game, interesting that poyet’s going with 3 at the back again. looks like a 3-4-2-1 (or 3-4-1-2), with bardsley and alonso as the wide mids. borini up top, as he should be.

  7. Speaking of Americans abroad, Altidore has been relegated to Sunderland’s U21 team for tonight’s game
    Pretty harsh
