SBI MLS Best XI (Week 7)

Nick Rimando

By IVES GALARCEP

Real Salt Lake continues to be the only undefeated team in Major League Soccer, and a big reason for that is the continued outstanding form of goalkeeper Nick Rimando.

The U.S. national team goalkeeper made a handful of jaw-dropping saves to help RSL post a 1-0 victory against the Portland Timbers. A showing that earned him another place on the SBI MLS Best XI.

Joining Rimando on this week’s Best XI are RSL teammates Chris Wingert and Ned Grabavoy, who delivered the game-winning goal to knock off the Timbers.

Clint Dempsey is making it a regular part of his routine to make our Best XI, with his two-assist effort in Seattle’s win against Chivas USA securing his third straight appearance on the team.

Here is the SBI MLS Best XI for Week Seven:

  1. How could the words “Aurelien Collin” and “Best” ever find themselves juxtaposed like this article attempts without having the qualifier “never” in there somewhere? He is lucky to make it through games the way he fouls.

    • Check your stats for this year. He only has seven fouls through six games…only one yellow card. By MLS stats he is about 83rd in the league in fouls committed this season. It is easy to just throw your opinion out there, but his play this season doesn’t support your comment.

      • Let’s check back at the halfway point. The season is young yet. Besides, he’s not far off his normal pace of 1.9 FC/GS. Currently he sits at 1.4. Last year, he was just under 2 fouls/game, the year before, just over.

And, this in in MLS, where fouling players has been raised to an art form.

  2. With Gaddis from Philly getting consistent Best XI appearances, not only here but around the web, what do you see happening with Philly’s right back situation? WIlliam’s is getting healthy and looked much better than Ray before he started on this tear, but Ray’s been one of the best defenders in the league so far. How do you decide who starts? We’re assuming Fabinho comes out and Ray moves over, but do you think more value can be had by moving Ray/Williams for a true left back? Or possibly moving Sheannon to CB?

  3. Wingert is quietly playing some really good soccer. Glad to see him get some recognition, as outside backs are always unheralded, and he’s not even the most renowned outside back on his own team.
