Chris Pontius will be spending another long stretch on the sidelines due to injury.

D.C. United announced on Wednesday that the midfielder had undergone surgery on his left hamstring and is expected to miss the next four to six months. The surgery is to hopefully fix a nagging hamstring injury that Pontius has been dealing with the last few seasons.

The longest-tenured D.C. United player had yet to make an appearance, and the club’s decision to acquire Chris Rolfe shows that Pontius wasn’t recovering as expected with regular rehab. Pontius’ surgery was conducted by U.S. Men’s National Team doctor Michael Gerhardt of Santa Monica Orthopaedics.

At best, Pontius can aim to return as soon as late August, though with a recurring injury problem, D.C. might feel better to let Pontius take his time to come back and make sure the muscle is 100 percent fit again before he takes the field.

In his time at D.C. United, Pontius has made 123 appearances with 27 goals and 16 assists.

  1. As someone who is not a DC United fan, I was always curious about Pontius and his national team potential. Didn’t watch him closely enough to know if could succeed at that level but as a previous poster mentioned, he was clearly one of the best attacking players in MLS when healthy. This a disappointing bit of news but he is still young enough to get back on track if he can get these injuries behind him.
