A quartet of New York Red Bulls Academy players headline the 24-player squad called into U.S. Men’s National Team training camp slated for next week in North Carolina.
Midfielders Adam Najem, Alex Muyl and Chris Lema, and goalkeeper Evan Louro were included in the squad, which will spend from Saturday to May 25th training on the campus of North Carolina State. The team will play a trio of friendlies during their stay, against the Carolina Railhawks (May 20), the Railhawks Under-23 team (May 22) and the Wilmington Hammerheads (May 24).
U.S. Under-20 National Team assistant coach Brian Bliss will oversee the camp in place of U-20 head coach Tab Ramos, who is on the coaching staff with the senior U.S. Men’s National Team for its pre-World Cup training camp at Stanford University

Onyewu is gutted
I like Onyewu, but he’s getting awful advice if he was being told he had a shot.
He was called in for the last friendly he was eligible for, and none of the other defenders has really done anything to lay definitive claim to a spot. Besides maybe Besler.
Either way, I’ll never forget Gooch.

I agree with Bach’s Thumb, like a contestant on American Idol crying when they don’t make it past prelims.
Looking at it another way, how good is US soccer getting that someone like Onyewu doesn’t make the team and really wasn’t in the running. 10 years ago nothing even close to that happens.
It’s pretty clear that (rightly or wrongly) you have much higher odds under Klinsmann if you play in MLS than in the Championship. He seems to be allergic to coming back home. To be fair, I don’t know all the details and it’s very likely that he gets paid more in England. However, I do think that if he was in MLS and was doing well, he very well could be in the 30 like Parkhurst, Edu, and Goodson.
Disagree. Gooch looked pretty shaky back there in his recent appearances. I think JK would have loved to take him due to his experience, but he simply wasn’t playing well enough. I know Ream had a good year, but he’s been out of the picture for awhile, and turned down his only callup this yr (yes I know why). The only Championship player I can think of with a real case is Williams, but I don’t think he is better than those called ahead of him.
Feel for Gooch, who was an absolute beast in his prime. His play over the years helped push the USMNT to the next level. And he’s right that no one can take that away from him.
Looking at the Championship players in the USMNT pool there are few who could actually displace the players called into the pre-world cup camp.
Championship players: Ream, Williams, Lichaj, Gooch, Shea, Homes, Holden. Of these players Ream, Williams, & Lichaj were the closest to making the 30….Unfortunately Williams & Lichaj were out injured at the end of the season and Ream chose not to take part in the last FIFA date camp (we all know why, but with the performance of the MLS’ers…Yedlin & Parkhurst provides the justification for his exclusion). Gooch has very poor last couple outings for the US (no better than Gonzo) and is slower & out of form with the rest of the squad. He adds nothing that Gonzo & Goodson can’t provide. Homes & Shea will be available next round, if they get minutes. Holden, unfortunately, is likely done at the international level…injuries just seem to be attracted to him.
NYCFC has created affiliations with several local youth teams in NYC. They will eventually have an academy of their own
Red Bulls always seem to have a lot of academy prospects. Anyone have any idea how NYCFC’s presence will change the scouting of the NY market? Don’t MLS teams have relatively set regions where they can recruit and develop talent? Will they split the NY market into regions? I’m just curious if anyone has any insight.
Great question. I have no ideas. It could be something like when teams file discovery claims on a player. First one to do it, gets him.
