Sporting Kansas City’s defense was already being stretched to its limits after injuries and national team call-ups, but Peter Vermes’ task of keeping together Major League Soccer’s best defense just became that much tougher.

Chance Myers is out for the season after suffering a torn Achilles during Sporting Kansas City’s 2-2 tie with Toronto FC on Friday.

Myers joins Ike Opara on the Sporting KC injured list, with Opara having suffered a season-ending surgery earlier in the campaign.

With Matt Besler away on U.S. Men’s National Team duty, and Aurelien Collin battling a hamstring injury, Sporting KC is down to the bare bones on the back-line, with Kevin Ellis and Igor Juliao stepping in, and Lawrence Olum another option to fill in at centerback.

Teenage defender Erik Palmer-Brown could also be called on to contribute more minutes despite having earned a red card in his professional debut two weeks ago.

Sporting KC has fallen into a three-match winless streak that has dropped the MLS Cup champions five points behind East-leading New England.

What do you think of this development? See Sporting KC being able to overcome these injuries and repeating as MLS Cup champions? Think Vermes will need to hit the transfer market this summer?
