The SBI Show: Episode 138 (Previewing MLS Week 10, talking USMNT, and more)

By IVES GALARCEP

A loaded weekend of MLS action, and the looming U.S. preliminary World Cup roster announcement are among the leading topics in the latest episode of The SBI Show.

Episode 138 of The SBI breaks down MLS Week 10, including the rivalry clash between the Philadelphia Union and D.C. United. A match that could be John Hackworth’s last chance to save his job, and Eddie Johnson’s last chance to impress Jurgen Klinsmann before the U.S. preliminary World Cup roster is announced.

Co-host Garrett Cleverly and I also discuss the injury issues surrounding the likes of Omar Gonzalez and Aron Johannson, as well as the recent World Cup roster announcements by Mexico and Germany.

  5. GK – Howard, Guzan, Rimando

Fullbacks – Besler, Gonzalez, Cameron, Beasley, Evans, Ream, Brooks, Parkhurst, Yedlin, Goodson

I know Ives likes Timmy Chandler getting a call but I don’t think he’s played enough and he hasn’t appeared for the US in a long time. That’s why I am picking Yedlin even though his form has been off recently. I don’t think he will be on the plane to Brazil anyway. My guess is that Klinsmann will only take 7 fullbacks since he can move F. Johnson to the back if he needs to. Brooks and Yedlin will not make the cut and then it will come down to either Evans or Parkhurst for the 7th spot.

In the midfield, assuming Klinsmann takes 8, the last spot will likely come down to Diskerud, Edu and Green. The questions will be if he wants to take a 4th defensive midfielder with Edu or a more creative attacking player like Diskerud or Green. I like Diskerud to nip the final spot given his ability to pass the ball and create chances for other players. We will see Green at the next World Cup in Russia. Edu is in a spot with too much depth unfortunately.

Up front, this leaves 5 spots for 7 players. The only three locks are Dempsey, Altidore and Johansen. I like Boyd because he can play the lone striker role in the 4-2-3-1 so I think he takes one spot. The last spot is between E. Johnson and Wondolowski. Eddie brings speed and the ability stretch a defense if Klinsmann converts to a 4-4-2 but Wondolowski is a classic poacher who always manages to find that little space to create the opportunity. My guess is that he picks Johnson. Agudelo is simply not the “Juan” this year. Maybe in 2018.
