Even in the midst of a terrible start to the season, the Montreal Impact proved that they can get a result against any team in MLS.

Behind two first half goals from Andres Romero and Jack McInerney, the Impact recorded the win of the weekend when they beat the New England Revolution, 2-0, at Stade Saputo in Montreal. The win ended the Impact’s three game winless run as well as the Revolution’s five-game winning streak.

The Impact got on the board early as Romero combined with Marco Di Vaio and the Italian sliced a pass through the Revolution defense. Romero was through on goal in the third minute and hesitated just enough to place a shot under Bobby Shuttleworth and give the Impact a rare lead.

McInerney doubled the lead in the 38th minute thanks to some help from Di Vaio and Shuttleworth. Di Vaio fired a long-range effort at Shuttleworth, and the Revolution goalkeeper spilled the shot, leaving the rebound for McInerney to slot home.

The Revolution stepped it up in the second half and attacked with more urgency but the Impact defended very well and very deep, with all eleven players behind the ball. Kelyn Rowe, Daigo Kobayashi, and Andy Dorman each had chances to score but fired either wide or forced Impact goalkeeper Troy Perkins into making a save.

Even in the loss, the match did have a silver lining for the Revolution, as it was Rowe’s first start since suffering a hamstring injury in late March.
