Visiting teams don’t generally make it a habit of going to BBVA Compass Stadium and dominating the Houston Dynamo’s tough defense, but Javier Morales did just that and did so from the opening seconds of Real Salt Lake’s 5-2 thrashing of the Dynamo.

Morales notched three goals and an assist against a Dynamo defense that just had no answers for him, and the complete performance helped earn Morales SBI MLS Player of the Week honors.

From his dazzling opening goal just 16 seconds into the match, to his pinpoint pass to set up Luke Mulholland’s finish, Morales turned in his best performance of what has already been an outstanding season.

Morales beat out a strong field of candidates that included Harrison Shipp, Dom Dwyer, Bradley-Wright Phillips and Marvin Chavez.

What did you think of Morales’ performance? Which player impressed you the most in MLS Week 10?

    • Sorry, but he gets a handicap for playing against the worst team in the league (not coincidentally coached by Frank Klopas, a coach who has zero regard for possession or, apparently, keeping his job) and a man up. Throw in the fact that SKC plays a possession based system which lacks a dominant goalscoring presence (lots of possession, not excessive goal scoring chances) and that resulted in overinflated passing stats. No knock against SKC, they are undoubtedly one of the best teams in the league.

Rosell, of course in the team of the week, but not player of the week.

  1. This is much better written than the first draft. Thanks for fixing it.

I can see the arguments for Javi over Shipp this week (Javi’s more complete performance, Shipp’s first goal was bs, Javi’s assist was of higher quality, RSL won their game more convincingly), but I still rate Shipp’s performance higher because he had no PK goal.

  2. Even at his age Javi is one of the best. I’m just glad he’s not going to the WC and if I’m selfish then I want Kyle B. to stay with RSL too but… he deserves a chance to fulfill a dream.
