MLS All-Star Ballots go live

By DAN KARELL

Starting Wednesday, fans can determine who will make up the MLS All-Star squad that will face Bayern Munich on August 6 in Portland.

MLS released the All-Star Game ballots and opened polling for fans to vote for their favorite players. Fans can vote for 11 players – one goalkeeper, three defenders, four midfielders, and one forward – out of 152 on the ballot. Portland Timbers head coach Caleb Porter will use the final roster against the defending German champions.

Fans will also have the opportunity to vote on Twitter from July 2-6. Online voting will close on July 11 at 3 p.m.

For the second consecutive year, fans will have the opportunity to add a forward to the All-Star Game based on whichever forward scores the most goals in EA Sports FIFA 14 video game in the “More than a Vote” Challenge.

Per the current collective bargaining agreement, a total of 32 players will be selected for the All-Star Game, though not all of them will be active for the match. The squad will include four goalkeepers, eight defenders, 13 midfielders, and seven forwards.

The squad will be determined by the fan vote, votes from the media and players themselves, and two selections made by commissioner Don Garber.

What do you think of this news? Do you plan on voting?

  1. FYI, fans get to vote for a goalie and 10 outfield players, not a goalie, three defenders, four mids and a forward (which would only be nine anyway).

  2. On a scale of 1-10, how excited are you guys about the All-Star game? I don’t mean this year specifically, but the ASG in general. I’m as huge an MLS fan as you’ll find, but I cannot get excited about a scrimmage. I give my excitement level a solid 3.5/10.

    • I don’t like ASGs for the most part, because they’re meaningless (except maybe a little bit in baseball) and tend to be offensive showcases rather than reflecting the true nature of the sport. MLS is better than most on the latter point, though, and I like the practice of bringing over a big-name European team, because it lets North American fans see players they wouldn’t ordinarily get a chance to see.

Or maybe I’m just excited this year because I’m going to Portland for the game…

    • I don’t like ASGs but I’m more interested in the MLS all-star game than others because it’s still soccer and it’s against European comp

    • I would go with the big name players against Bayern Munich. MLS needs to go with the best. That said, the average age among those players is quite high.

  4. Ives and Mr. Karell, I know this has been mentioned in several threads so it is not just me, though it seems to be a relative small number of users affected. There seems to be something wrong when your website loads. The background is blue where it is normally white, making it nearly impossible to read the text. I have no problem when using my phone but when I switch to my desktop computer the problem still exists. If you are not already aware of this, please fix it.
    Thanks!

    • I’ve had that problem too, in internet explorer. But if I switch to google chrome it works fine. But it seems like more

      • It works for me on the new IE, but on chrome I get the blue background. Might need to check to see if updates are available in chrome

      • That used to be the fix for me, but now I alternate between mozilla and chrome but still the blue background.
