The Kenny Miller era in Vancouver is officially over.

After nearly three years with the Vancouver Whitecaps, the club and Miller mutually agreed to terminate his contract on Sunday, which was set to expire on June 30. The 34-year-old was signed by the Whitecaps in July 2012 as the club’s fourth Designated Player.

“We are thankful for the contributions Kenny made both on and off the pitch during his time in Vancouver,” Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson said in a statement. “He has been a great role model, a constant professional, and someone who I consider a very good friend. We wish him and his family all the best.”

Miller has recently become a player on the periphery as Robinson has focused more on the young core of forwards in the Whitecaps squad, including Darren Mattocks, Kekuta Manneh, and Sebastian Fernandez.

Speaking to reporters on a conference call after the announcement, Miller denied any rumors of a return to Rangers in his native Scotland and said he likely wouldn’t be able to join an English Premier League club because of his age.

The news came somewhat as a shock because Miller had just featured for the Whitecaps off the bench on Saturday in their 3-2 victory against the San Jose Earthquakes. Miller signed a one-year extension in July 2013 through June of this year, and there was reportedly a new contract extension on the table.

In his time in Vancouver, Miller started 34 times in 43 games, finishing with 13 goals and three assists. Last fall, Miller retired from Scotland’s national team following a 12-year run where he made 69 appearances for the Tartan Army and scored 18 goals.
