The MLS Disciplinary Committee once again sent the message on Thursday that diving and embellishing are not things the league is planning on tolerating.

Montreal Impact defender Hassoun Camara and Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Sebastian Fernandez were fined by the league Thursday for simulation and embellishment, respectively.

Camara’s fine stems from an incident during the Impact’s May 31 contest with the New England Revolution. A sprinting Camara went down in the vicinity of Revolution forward Teal Bunbury despite little contact. Although Bunbury received a yellow for the offense, the league saw the play as simulation and fined Camara an undisclosed amount.

Fernandez also felt the league’s wrath, as the Whitecaps midfielder was punished for embellishing an incident in Vancouver’s last game against the Portland Timbers. Fernandez was fined an undisclosed amount for falling to the ground after a confrontation with Timbers centerback Pa Modou Kah.

On the other end of the spectrum, Sporting Kansas City’s Igor Juliao was fined for hands to the face/head of D.C. United’s Davy Arnaud. Juliao was seen getting physical during a scuffle between the two sides at the end of their game on May 31.

What do you think of the punishments handed out? Were these finable offenses?

  1. I applaud the MLS for being a leader to the rest of the soccer world.

However, a slap-on-the-wrist penalty won’t do anything, and a real-money penalty should really be reserved for violent unsportsmanlike conduct.

A better punishment is simply a retroactive red card. This will eventually translate to the player’s pocketbook (less games played, worse stats and lower offers for next contract), and team supporters at all levels will suffer and discourage practicing the art of flopping. Today team supporters and players themselves can often justify it by saying the trade-off is worth it. Red cards, already a part of the game, based on replays, can easily put an end to it. It also has the advantage that visiting teams from Europe can play according to these rules, the rule is easy to adopt everywhere, even between different leagues, where fining is a lot tougher to apply.

  2. I would love to see video of the simulations & embellishments on SBI & MLS websites, perhaps to shame the players & discourage this practice in the league.

  4. Actually, Fernandez deliberately slapped himself in the face before dramatically falling to the ground. What a performance!
