The fourth round of the 2014 U.S. Open Cup is officially underway, as two Major League Soccer sides booked their places in the tournament’s fifth round.

The San Jose Earthquakes and Houston Dynamo both advanced through the tournament’s fourth round Wednesday night by knocking off Sacramento Republic FC and the Laredo Heat, respectively.

The Earthquakes narrowly avoided an upset at the hands of their USL Pro opposition by overcoming a one goal deficit to win 2-1. The Quakes were led by goals from Khari Stephenson and Cordell Cato, who combined to cancel out Justin Braun’s opener for Sacramento.

In Wednesday’s other action, the Dynamo advanced by way of a 1-0 scoreline in their matchup with the Laredo Heat of the PDL. The Dynamo took the lead for good in the game’s 37th minute via Alex Lopez, who was assisted on the play by forward Omar Cummings.

With the victory, the Quakes earn the right to host PSA Elite (USASA) or travel to Seattle  to take on the Sounders on June 24. Meanwhile, the Dynamo will now play host to either FC Dallas or the NASL’s San Antonio Scorpions on June 24 or 25.

The Open Cup continues with matches this Saturday when the Atlanta Silverbacks hosts Real Salt Lake, the New York Cosmos host the New York Red Bulls, and the Carolina RailHawks host Chivas USA.
