Costa Rica was supposed to be an afterthought in the aptly named World Cup “Group of Champions,” but thanks in large part to Christian Bolaños, Los Ticos are on top of the group after two matches.

Bolaños’ measured presence in the midfield steadied Costa Rica in its 1-0 victory over Italy. The 30-year-old not only helped defend, but relieved pressure with a wide range of passes and plenty of poise on the ball in tight situations. Bolaños’ performance earned him SBI World Cup Man of the Match.

Bolaños beat out teammates Keilor Navas and Celso Borges for the honors, while Daniele De Rossi put in another fine shift for the Azzurri.

What are your thoughts on Bolaños’ performance? Who impressed you the most in Costa Rica’s 1-0 victory?

  1. I believe Bolanos should get it as he is playing poised and confident like he used to in the past. He’s back and getting stronger. But yes, right after him should be Bryan Ruiz for a great game.

  2. Costa Rica have been one of the most well organized and disciplined teams at this tournament. Giancarlo Gonzalez haad a fantastic game in the center and every player on in a Ticos shirt helped to keep the ball and play it smart in the latter stages. England are up next to get CONCACAF’d

  3. Asked just before the start of the World Cup how he felt in this group where every opponent was a former world champion, the Costa Rican coach replied, “We will show them we can play.” Viva Costa Rica!

  4. I think Ruiz should have at least been in the conversation. Not only the goal, but his passing was excellent, and he provided such a sense of calmness every time he had the ball. You could tell his teammates were looking for him when they were under pressure.
