Colombia centerback Mario Yepes peeled back the years in his nation’s 3-0 victory in their World Cup opener against Greece.

The 38-year-old Yepes was instrumental in Colombia’s clean sheet by stifling the Greek attack time and time again. The former AC Milan defender displayed energy that matched his experience on the defensive end by keeping a relatively inexperienced Colombian side steady in what marked the country’s first World Cup appearance since 1998.

The Colombian captain even nearly made a mark on the attacking end with a marauding second half run upfield that resembled a 20-year-old midfielder much more than a defender approaching his forties.

Yepes’ strong defensive performance and overall leadership were enough to earn him SBI World Cup Man of the Match, beating out teammates James Rodriguez, Teo Gutierrez and Victor Ibarbo for today’s honors.

What did you think of Yepes’ performance? Who stood out the most to you in Colombia’s victory over Greece?
