SBI World Cup Man of the Match: Thomas Muller

Muller-PortugalWorldCup2014-getty

By RYAN TOLMICH

After winning the Golden Boot in the 2010 tournament, Germany’s Thomas Muller got his 2014 World Cup campaign started in spectacular fashion in the German’s 4-0 rout of Portugal.

The 24-year-old Bayern Munich star kicked off his tournament with a hat-trick in what turned out to be quite the statement from Germany. Muller and co. opened the scoring via a penalty kick goal in the 12th minute and never looked back, as Portugal wilted under German pressure time and time again.

Muller’s opener may have set the tone, but his second of the afternoon killed Portuguese dreams, as he took advantage of a poor clearance from Raul Meireles to finish just before half time. Muller added one more for good measure in the 78th minute to push the score to 4-0, and the remaining minutes turned out to be little more than a formality on the way to a crucial three points for Muller’s Germany.

Muller’s hat-trick is the first of this year’s World Cup, and it was enough to earn him honors as Man of the Match ahead of teammates Toni Kroos, Mats Hummels and Manuel Neuer.

What did you think of Muller’s performance? Which player stood out the most to you?

  1. Why the Portuguese thought a Viking would do better job in the Brazilian heat than the actual Raul Meireles we will never know
