Hours after advancing to the World Cup quarterfinals, the Costa Rican Football Federation learned some news that put a slight damper on their nation’s celebrations.

In a press release on Sunday evening, Costa Rica announced that New York Red Bulls defender Roy Miller has been ruled out of at least the quarterfinals with a left hamstring strain. The release says that Miller suffered the injury at the end of practice when Costa Rica were working on penalty kicks.

Team doctor Vladimir Badilla said in the release that after undergoing an MRI, Miller was diagnosed with a grade one hamstring strain, an injury that could take seven to 21 days to heal, likely ruling Miller out of the World Cup all together.

Miller, 29, made his World Cup debut in Costa Rica’s scoreless draw with England, playing the full 90 minutes in the shutout. Miller will remain with Los Ticos during the duration of their World Cup campaign, instead of immediately returning to New York.

What do you think of this news? Disappointed to hear Miller is out? Do you see him recovering in time to play for the Red Bulls when he returns to the USA?

  1. Doubt the Ticos could make the semis with the injuries and suspensions piling up, unless Holland collapse in the next game.

  2. Bigger blow for RBNY than Costa Rica considering Roy hadn’t seen the field yet and didn’t look like unseating Junior Diaz.

      • if i were tasked with defending robben in the final 8, i would openly mock his diving…albeit when the ref isn’t looking. If robben and i were going for the ball near the sideline, and it was obvious that it was going out and our legs/feet barely grazed, i would flop and convulse on the way to the sideline. I would use any chance to do to the arm-flop motion…anything to get under his skin. Think Sugar Ray leonard mocking Duran. Thats what the Ticos defender should do to Robben. The Ticos need to go after Robben’s head. Robben is no MJ…he wouldnt be able to use taunting as a motivation

      • now that is a great idea. imagine rob em shakes your hand and you dive. love it!
