When Chicago Fire rookie Harrison Shipp scores goals, he does so in bunches.

With his only other goalscoring performance coming in a hat-trick back on May 11, the 22-year-old netted a brace in the Fire’s 3-2 defeat to the Seattle Sounders on Saturday, bringing his season tally to five.

It wasn’t just the goals; it was the way in which they were scored. Shipp’s first of the game came on a spectacular individual run which saw him weave in and out of the Sounders defense with the poise and composure of an MLS veteran.

The rookie followed his first goal with an equally impressive second, as Shipp found space in the Sounders box before firing past Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei. Shipp’s calmness, grace and goalscoring touch were enough to earn him this week’s honors as SBI MLS Rookie of the Week, his sixth of the season.

Shipp beat out Toronto FC rookie defender Nick Hagglund and D.C. United centerback Steve Birnbaum for this week’s honors.

What do you think of Shipp’s performance? What other rookies impressed you this week?

  1. A rookie midfielder (a college grad at that!) with poise, vision, and a nack for scoring…. younger version of Bradley?
