SBI World Cup Man of the Match: Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo of Portgual almost scores with a free kick

Credit Cristiano Ronaldo for putting in another top-class performance even with Portugal’s very slim chances of advancing to the Round of 16.

Ronaldo’s performance wasn’t enough to help his country advance past the group stage, but it earned him SBI World Cup Man of the Match honors. His 80th-minute volley helped deflate a surging Ghanian attack and give the United States — which was down 1-0 to Germany at the time — a reason to expect a trip to the Round of 16.

The star winger was outstanding throughout the afternoon, putting six of his eight shots on frame, including a chip early in the match that nearly found the underside of the crossbar for a goal. Again, Ronaldo was the focus for Portugal’s opposition, as Ghana fouled the 29-year-old four times in 90 minutes.

Ronaldo beat out teammate João Moutinho and Ghanian forward Asamoah Gyan for the honors.

  1. Only player to win man of the match for 2 games. One of which he played and the other for the team he put through to the next round.
