If the Netherlands’ first three World Cup contests have taught us anything, it’s that there are few players in the game of soccer more fear-inducing for opposing defenders than Arjen Robben.

The 30-year-old produced yet another piece of counterattacking magic in Monday’s 2-0 win over Chile, as the Netherlands picked up their third victory and the top spot in Group B. Much like the two games that preceded this one, Robben inspired the Dutch on a goalscoring sequence with his blistering speed on the ball. In extra time, Bayern Munich star sprinted his way into the left side of the box and fired a cross towards substitute Memphis Depay, who easily slotted home into an empty net.

Robben’s performance may be defined by that run, but the Dutch star’s influence certainly wasn’t limited to one brilliant pass. Robben had three shots and appeared to be a menacing offensive threat throughout the afternoon for a Dutch side without star striker Robin van Persie.

Robben’s constant attacking presence was enough to earn him today’s SBI World Cup Man of the Match, ahead of teammates Leroy Fer and Nigel De Jong, and Chile’s Charles Aranguiz.

What did you think of Robben’s performance? Who stood out for you in the Netherlands’ group-clinching win over Chile?

  1. why don’t MLS drop 20 million dollars to land Robben? He’s 30 and used to be injured all the time but is totally world class and would up the prestige of the league instantly

    • 20 million dollars??? never. You have to pay 60 to 80 million dollars to land Robben. AS Roma payed 20 million for a player like Strootman
