Coming off a strong season at Juventus, France National Team head coach Didier Deschamps was counting on Paul Pogba to have a huge impact for Les Blues at the World Cup.

On Monday, in France’s Round of 16 match against Nigeria, Pogba more than held his own against the Super Eagles and put home the game-winning goal in France’s 2-0 victory. Pogba, who became the youngest French goal scorer at the World Cup since Thierry Henry in 1998, was our choice for SBI World Cup Man of the Match.

In the 79th minute, Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama couldn’t fully push away a corner kick into the box, with the ball resting in the air for Pogba to head home into an empty net. Pogba beat out teammates Karim Benzema, Mathieu Valbuena, and Nigeria’s Enyeama for the honors.

  1. Two shots and a lucky bounce goal and you are nominated MOTM. Valbuena is MOTM as he has been in the three games he’s played for France. The guy is a magnet and hardly ever loses the ball or makes a bad pass and is involved in the most dangerous French attacks as was the case in this match.

  2. IMO Valbuena was the most valuable man on the pitch for either team. He controlled the midfield area, was a pest on defense and was trustworthy when passing….
