In the build-up to England’s clash with Uruguay, England manager Roy Hodgson challenged Uruguay star Luis Suarez to use this World Cup to demonstrate his status as a “world class” player.

Suarez did exactly that on Thursday in Sao Paulo, scoring twice in Uruguay’s 2-1 victory over England to cement his status as public enemy No. 1.

After missing Uruguay’s opening loss to Costa Rica due to injury, the Liverpool forward couldn’t have looked healthier when he opened the scoring with a 39th-minute header. The 27-year-old forward found his way onto a virtually perfect cross from Edinson Cavani to send England goalkeeper Joe Hart the wrong way and give his side the 1-0 lead.

Quite fittingly, it was Suarez who took the life out England in the 85th minute, just nine minutes after they found their equalizer, by capitalizing on a Three Lions defensive lapse to rocket home from close range.

Suarez’s scoring outburst was enough to earn him recognition as SBI World Cup Man of the Match as he beat out teammates Diego Godin, Fernando Muslera and England’s Wayne Rooney, who finally broke his World Cup scoring curse despite the loss.

What did you think of Suarez’s performance against England? Who stood out for you in Uruguay’s win over England?

  2. The U.S. has to look out for something similar from Portugal and Cristiano. The Iberians do not have a second player of the quality of Cavani, but they arguably have a better midfield than Uruguay. Although the energy with which Uruguay played impressed.
