Americans Abroad: Weekend Preview

Greg Garza (USA Today)

By FRANCO PANIZO

If you really dig matchups involving Americans, this weekend might be perfect for you.

There are three games being played outside of MLS that could pit Americans against one another, and Friday’s clash between Club Tijuana and Tigres UANL is arguably the best. The match might see Joe Corona and Greg Garza go up against former teammate Herculez Gomez and Jose Torres in an encounter that pits the 0-2 Xolos against 2-0 Tigres. Corona is the player to keep an eye on after his solid weekend performance and goal-scoring outing in Copa MX on Wednesday.

Another duel will take place in Norway, as Mix Diskerud and Rosenborg BK pay a visit to Michael Stephens and Stabaek IF. Rosenborg are currently in fifth place in the Eliterserien, and are in need of a road victory against their 11th-place opposition in order to potentially jump back into a place with a Europa League berth.

The last game on tap for this weekend that could see Americans go up against one another is Saturday’s Atlas-Chiapas brawl. Edgar Castillo seems a sure bet to once again be in the lineup for Atlas while Farfan’s role is way more unclear given that he came off the bench and scored an own goal last weekend.

Here is who the Americans Abroad battle this weekend:

  1. “If no chance in Belgium, go to Turkey or Greece or Netherlands or France.”

Why stop there? Why not England, Spain or Italy? I like how folks just make it seem like X player is walking away from a buffet of sweet European choices. He’s been in Europe for a while now and he knows his choices, I’m certain, much better than any of us who just list an imaginary endless options of selections.

  2. Kljestan needs to stay in EUROPE. No need to scoot home to MLS. Stay in Europe and fight for your place. If no chance in Belgium, go to Turkey or Greece or Netherlands or France.

Makes probably like 800 K a season. He can easily find that in other places other than MLS. not worth a DP spot

  3. Wow, nice writeup. I might watch some of these games now. Well, not the Norwegian league game because it’s not on TV but maybe the Mexican games.
