Cahill claims 2014 ESPY for MLS Best Athlete

Tim Cahill

While Tim Cahill was busy delivering tackles and hitting passes to teammates on Wednesday, ESPN was busy giving him some recognition.

Cahill won the 2014 MLS Best Athlete award at the ESPYS in Los Angeles on Wednesday night for his sterling 2013 season. Cahill led the New York Red Bulls to a historic Supporters’ Shield win last year, scoring 11 goals and adding five assists while also earning spots in the MLS All-Star Team and MLS Best XI.

The Australian international – who started in a loss to the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday night and is not far removed from an impressive campaign at the World Cup in Brazil – beat Marco Di Vaio, Robbie Keane and 2013 MLS MVP Mike Magee for the award thanks to fan voting that ended on July 16.

This season, the 34-year-old midfielder has one goal and one assist in 11 appearances for New York.

    • Nice award for Cahill, but I agree. They are more about The Worldwide Leader’s image, self-importance, and self-congratulation than about the athletes.

  2. Eh. I wouldn’t have voted for him.

He plays with a ton of heart, but he hasn’t been as productive as most thought.
