On the field and in the booth. That is where you will be able to find Tim Howard this season.

Howard has agreed to a multiyear deal with NBC Sports Group that will see him work up to 10 Premiership games this season on days that his club, Everton, does not play. He will serve as a game commentator or on-site studio analyst for high-profile matches.

The 35-year-old goalkeeper, who transformed into a full-blown celebrity in the United States this summer because of his sterling World Cup performance with the U.S. Men’s National Team, started working for NBCSN last season. He did seven games and received much public approval.

Howard has yet to publicly announce whether he expects to continue to play or retire internationally.

What do you think of Howard signing on to do up to 10 Premiership games this season for NBCSN? Like what he brings to the table as a commentator and analyst?

  1. I’ve seen him play and I’ve seen/heard him do commentary. Now it’s time for him to secure his legendary status and combine the two tasks. Interesting in-game broadcast commentary and elite goalkeeping at the same time.

  3. not sure how I feel about Timmy in the commentary box. Good for him if that’s what he wants to do.. how many other active players do this? I can’t recall a time that an active player took a regular spot on air – could there be a little conflict of interest there?

  4. I thought he did well in the games that I saw. I also believe he said in an interview after the season that he enjoyed it even more than he thought he would and it’s definitely something he’ll look into full time when retires from playing.

Don’t quote me on that, b/c I can’t remember where I think I saw it, but I think I did.

  5. Interesting, but it seems unusual. Is there precedent for an active player being a regular in-game commentator (as opposed to an occasional interviewee or studio guest) for games in his own league?

  6. Tim Howard already stated that he is done with international soccer. He said he is fit and will play out his club contract, barring injury, but no more play for the USMNT.

      • Luc is wrong. Howard has not said any such thing.

“Howard indicated that his international future could be determined soon after he returns to his Premier League club on Aug. 3, when he’ll consult with Everton manager Roberto Martinez and U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann.”

“Asked if that meant he was leaning toward sticking around, Howard, who in April signed a contract extension with Everton that expires on the eve of the next World Cup, insisted he could still go either way.”

    • Ummm when did he state this??? There has been nothing in the media. He simply said he is mulling his future and hopes to have a decision soon.

  7. Preparing for life after football while playing football —- a smart, smart man. Howard was pretty insightful and articulate in his 2-3 matches last season. I thoroughly enjoyed it and he didn’t come across as some nit-wit providing color for Arlo White. He actually provided something of value. Timmy can only get better. He can eve have the distinction of being the most tatted broadcast personnel in the business.

      • Timmy does have Torettes and has been an “Ambassador” for the cause. Early in his career he did explain that he had tried meds. but was unable to take them because of the side effects and drowsiness they caused relating to his game. Not sure what his present day situation is nor does it matter…haters will always find a reason to be haters.

  8. Cool. I thought he did a good job last season. Looks like Timmy is starting to think about a career after his playing days are over.

    • His information is far better than the other US commentators. But his delivery is too dry and laid back for my tastes. Give me “the ole’ onion bag” color commentary any day of the week!

      • Public speaking skills can be learned and I would miss Timmy if he was totally gone.

Hope he has a broadcast beard.
