After a slow start to his Major League Soccer career, Bradley Wright-Phillips has proven to be one of the league’s most lethal finishers.

The New York Red Bulls forward scored two goals in his side’s 2-2 draw against the Houston Dynamo last Friday at BBVA Compass Stadium, taking his goal-scoring tally this season to 14 goals. Wright-Phillips’ performance earned him SBI MLS Player of the Week honors for the second time this season.

Wright-Phillips scored his first in the 13th minute as he perfectly timed a run past the Dynamo back line on to a long ball from Eric Alexander, and finished past Tally Hall with a left-footed shot. The Englishman scored his second in the 72nd minute when Ambroise Oyongo lofted in a cross from the left and Wright-Phillips looped in a header over the out-stretched arms of Hall.

Wright-Phillips beat out Erick Torres, Diego Valeri, and Sebastian Fernandez for this week’s honors.

What did you think of Wright-Phillips’ performance? Which player stood out the most to you in MLS Week 17?

Clint Irwin, I thought, was absolutely phenomenal for the Rapids. Cost my team two points. Deserved at least am honorable mention.

this guy bombed in League 1 or Championship right?

why’s he so effective in MLS? or is this all just a fluke?

and when does Henry contract ends

I wouldn’t say he ‘bombed” necessarily. IIRC he didn’t play quite so close to goal as he does with NYRB, and it even took him a while to get going last year. Also, he has missed plenty of opportunities that he should have put away in games this year. Great player, and I wouldn’t say it is a slight to MLS with how much success he is having this year compared to strike-rates in other leagues he has played. He is just on fire at the moment, making excellent runs and finding himself in good scoring positions regularly.

Bombed in League 1? He has 77 goals in English football… some PL, Championship and League 1… and he played as an out and out winger in England…

      • Angelo that knows something about soccer

You’re a troll. He’s on fire because Henry draws the attention of the D and then puts beautiful balls to BWP. However, you can’t take it all away from BWP as he’s been making the smart runs and his finishing has been steadily improving.

  • Quit whining about soccer in the US

Man, I used to kill myself laughing when FIFA would have him score so many goals.
    Sorry BWP.

He is scoring some real nice goals….and a few of them.

  • The Second Earl of Pugilism

He has a brother who plays for England named Francis Wright-Jeffers. They are the sons or janitors of former Arsenal striker Monty Python-Wright. I once saw them both go for centuries at Wimbledon. I own a victrola. Good day.
