The Colorado Rapids exacted a measure of revenge on Friday night, and in doing so climbed closer to the upper reaches of the Western Conference standings.
A pair of first-half goals from Nick LaBrocca and Drew Moor helped the Rapids coast to a 3-0 romp against Chivas USA on Friday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The victory pushed the Rapids to within two points of Real Salt Lake for second place in the West.
The result was a far cry from the outcome the last time these teams met, when Chivas USA recorded a 3-1 victory over the Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on May 11.
LaBrocca opened the scoring against his former club in the 16th minute with a curling left-footed shot from 23 yards out that left Dan Kennedy no chance and gave LaBrocca his first goal in a year.
Moor headed home a Dillon Powers corner kick just 10 minutes later to give the Rapids a comfortable cushion Chivas USA never really threatened. Panamanian forward Gabriel Torres finished the rout by curling a right-footed shot from 17 yards out for his first goal of the season.
Rapids goalkeeper Clint Irwin recorded one save to preserve the shutout for the Rapids, who are now 2-1-2 in their past five heading into a mid-week clash against struggling New England.
Chivas USA has lost two straight after rattling off four straight wins, and must now regroup ahead of a meeting with FC Dallas next week.
