D.C. United made another statement on Friday night that they are a legitimate playoff contender.

Ben Olsen’s side extended their two-point lead atop the Eastern Conference as they won their second consecutive road match, beating the San Jose Earthquakes, 2-1. D.C. United’s performance on the road made them our choice for SBI MLS Team of the Week.

Even without Fabian Espindola, others have been stepping up, including goalscorers Eddie Johnson and Luis Silva, who put D.C. United up 2-0 inside 27 minutes. Goalkeeper Bill Hamid also came up big with seven saves to preserve the win.

D.C. United beat out the New York Red Bulls, Seattle Sounders, and Toronto FC for this week’s honors.

    • A very appropriate comment, JayAre! When a substitute comes off at the World Cup a statistic is displayed on the screen showing distance covered. In all cases it is many kilometers. I was just wondering how many feet Eddie Johnson walked during the DCU – SJ match since he appears to be the laziest player I have ever seen.

  1. At the end of the day, its results that matter. If Goetze doesn’t score yesterday, and Argentina win their second straight game on penalties, nobody — and I mean nobody — in the world is going to care about how they looked doing it. They’d be remembered as world champions.

DC is getting results ugly, but that’s all that matters.

  2. Interesting pick. I’m a massive DCU supporter but I thought NYRB would be a lock for sure. Henry was in rare form.

  3. Not second, but THIRD consecutive MLS road match with a win (Montreal, Toronto, San Jose), but who’s counting. DCU wasn’t as bad as their record last season and I’m afraid they may not be as good as their record this season, but fans hope.

    • They deserved their record last season, but they had a very good offseason with a bunch of new signings and their young players improved.

  4. Good win – I thought they gutted it out well to close but SJ gave them a run for their money. Huge improvement over last year but they still have a ways to go. I didn’t think they looked like a playoff team this weekend. Johnson needs to step up and they need Espindola back for sure. Hamid saved them and I really like the work that Kitchen does in the midfield…..

    • Figured they would. Olsen is sharp.

If DC can finally get that stadium thing solved, I wonder if they might could return to their early-day-of-MLS form. Lotta room to grow, in the East.

      • Return to their early MLS form with Olson in charge? I will admit that after last season I haven’t watched a game yet after the debacle of last season (which was worse than Olson’s 1st season), but so far his teams, when they win, don’t look pretty doing so. I would call him the Mourinho of MLS if he ever won anything considering his tactical preferences.

      • The playoff game in Olsen’s first season was fun to watch, but I must admit DC has not been an exciting team to watch since then. I’m happy they’re winning, but I won’t be tuning in until they fix they’re style. Maybe it’ll change when they put more money into the team.
