On a World Cup rest day, Major League Soccer continued, with the defending champions returning home to take on the Chicago Fire. In hot and humid conditions, neither team was able to find the final breakthrough as both sides settled for a 1-1 draw. Sporting KC’s Dom Dwyer scored the opener in the 33rd minute when he took advantage of a poor mistake by Patrick Ianni and finished one-on-one with Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson. Mike Magee hit right back in the 40th minute in similar fashion, this time though being fed a pass from Alex and scoring easily. Sporting KC midfielder Graham Zusi made his return to the field for the first time since returning home from the World Cup.

Meanwhile, AZ Alkmaar released a statement on Sunday that former U.S. Men’s National Team player Freddy Adu would be joining the club on trial starting on Monday. The trial is the third for Adu in 2014, following a spell at Blackpool in England and Staebak in Norway.

Finally, Matt Besler is considering his options, whether he wants to remain in MLS or move abroad, Tim Ream signed a three-year extension with Bolton Wanderers, and Under-17 Men’s National Team head coach Richie Williams called up 38 players for a July training camp in California.

Here is a rundown of all the stories featured on SBI today:

  1. What happened with Freddy at Staebak? I don’t see any links saying he wasn’t offered a contract, etc. C’mon, Bob. Help an American out!

    • I second this. Is there any information about what happened there? I think all USMNT fans wish Adu the best. It seemed like that was going to be a great situation for both him and Bob.

  2. Freddy Adu watching is a pastime for US Soccer Fans, and I’m as guilty as anybody. Deep down, I think most fans want him to have success–not the kind of success that we once envisioned, but just to find a solid home and become a regular player. I don’t feel sorry for him though–he’s made tons of money, and lived in Lisbon, Monaco, the Turkish Black Sea coast, Greece, etc… We think of him as a failure, but I’d like to fail like that…

    • The missed revenue opportunity is that someone should have been producing a reality show on Adu. It could be called “The Trialist” or “Finding Freddy a Job”.

People would be legitimately interested in what goes on in these “trials” and there should be a ton of material for a good reality show.

Freddy is only 24 so these trials should go on for a few years yet.

    • Prob you’ll have to wait until morning for the kind of confirmation you are seeking, but it’s being reported by many top journalists as of now. Almost certainly real.

    • Yedlin was the most exciting player on the pitch during our WC run, IMO. If he goes to Roma and (crucially) gets regular playing time, he’ll only be better in 2018.
