With what could possibly be the goal of the tournament to this point in the World Cup, David Luiz kicked Brazil into the semifinals.

Luiz lined up a free kick from well outside the penalty area and beat Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina to the top-right corner. With a dipping shot, Luiz gave Brazil a 2-0 lead in the 69th minute.

The goal proved to be the winner, as James Rodriguez pulled Colombia back within one on a late penalty kick. Luiz helped keep Colombia at bay in the attacking third. With his overall performance, Luiz earned the SBI World Cup Man of the Match award.

Luiz claims the award over his center back partner, Thiago Silva, as well as Rodriguez and Brazil forward Hulk.

What did you make of Luiz’s performance? Was that goal the goal of the tournament? Which player stood out the most to you?

  1. Too bad Hulk was not fouled on the call leading to Liuz’s free kick. Pity,…Brazil getting more help from the refs. Why don’t they just give Brazil the trophy,…hold a parade in the favelas and let the rest of the teams play for the World Cup.

    • That ref was back and forth all game, with no side receiving any overall benefit as compared to the other. Whoever it was (can’t remember now) should have been booked for his studs up foul on Hulk earlier, too, and wasn’t.
