SBI Tuesday Rewind: Donovan gets farewell; Gonzalez leaves MLS; Jones lands in New England; and more

Landon Donovan

As it turns out, Landon Donovan will get a final match with the U.S. Men’s National team. After Donovan was unceremoniously cut from the World Cup squad this summer, it looked like Donovan would never wear the red, white and blue again. But U.S. Soccer announced Tuesday he will get a farewell match, even if it’s not a full-blown testimonial.

Meanwhile, likely due to a strong World Cup showing, Giancarlo Gonzalez is a member of the Columbus Crew no more. The Costa Rican defender was transferred to Serie A side Palermo on Tuesday. He leaves the Crew after just six months on a three-year deal with the Italian club.

And Jermaine Jones made his debut at training for the New England Revolution on Tuesday and SBI’s Carl Setterlund was on hand to hear from the USMNT midfielder. Although it was widely reported Jones preferred landing with the Chicago Fire, he told reporters the Revs’ strong interest in signing Jones convinced the German-American to be open to joining.

    • The so-called “single entity” structure of the league creates a more than confusing situation when it comes to the selling and signing of players.

MLS is probably on better financial footing than Serie A, but would you call Serie A “Mickey Mouse?”

      • Sure MLS is on solid financial footing, but if were on the same financial footing as Serie A, shouldn’t it be time to strip away some of the messy rules that supported us on our way here. We can outgrow single entity. I’d say that in a league where Dempsey, Bradley, Jones and Edu all came back through different rulesets that had to be explained each time, we have a problem.

      • They can’t just strip away the rules overnight. The current CBA ends at the end of the season (I think). That is when the rules will change. I doubt they’ll do away with all of the funky things, but over time it will become more and more open.

      • Counterpoint: dempsey, bradley, jones and edu all came back.

Jones didn’t come “back,” technically, but he’s here all the same.

      • Respectful of this apparently very commonly shared opnion… but becoming quite confused as well.

I’m not kidding when I say there are decision makers for Serie A would spit out their chianti if they heard you suggest that we should be emulating them (or any of their peers amongst the top European Leagues) — they would kill to have our system, but it’s impossible to implement at this point for them. They get to demo the FIFA version… Financial Fair Play, which has all the credibility of a diet program conceived by the Cookie Monster, not that the patient can be saved in the long-run, anyway.

Single entity is a gift. A magic bullet that they can never have. Be thankful for it. Can’t catch up to Europe by matching their pace… .gotta find ways to be faster, guys

    • JB,

If a coin flip keeps people that call the league Mickey Mouse away I am all for it.
Your post tells me, I guess not, but I do pray someday it will happen.
