SBI MLS Player of the Week: Fabian Castillo

Following a disappointing midweek loss in the U.S. Open Cup semifinals, it would have been easy for FC Dallas to enter Saturday’s clash with the San Jose Earthquakes with splintered confidence. However, Fabian Castillo wasn’t going to let that happen.

The FC Dallas forward led the way as FC Dallas overwhelmed the Earthquakes on their way to a 5-0 victory. Castillo proved to be the catalyst for three FC Dallas goals, scoring two himself while also picking up an assist. The Columbian now has either a goal 0r an assist in each of his last 10 appearances .

Castillo proved to be the key cog in FC Dallas’ statement victory, earning the forward recognition as SBI MLS Player of the Week. Castillo beat out a strong group of candidates including Tesho Akindele, Justin Meram, Joao Plata and Dom Dwyer for this week’s honor.

What did you think of Castillo’s performance? Who impressed you the most in MLS Week 23?

I don’t expect him to stay after this season, he’s got way too much potential for him not to want to test his mettle overseas. Wouldn’t be surprised if the Colombian FA starts calling him up either…

Couldn’t be happier for the guy, his hard work on and off the field have earned him a permanent fan, and I can’t imagine I’m alone.

Can throw a DP contract at him next year or just a bunch of money. The CBA makes things weird. I think it will help that his coach is Colombian too. Pareja seems to be very good at this whole management thing.

I’d be very surprised to see him move in the offseason. He’s always had this potential, but this is the first season we’ve gotten this work ethic and consistency out of him. FCD already have 3 DPs, but if he can take this form into a deep playoff run he would definitely be in a position to make more, and though he surely has people scouting him, I can’t see him moving this winter.

I’m not sure he leaves this year. The consistency issue isn’t gone yet. That being said, it’s a problem to have- when your guys play so well you worry they will be poached away.

  • TJ

One of the most dominating performances I have ever seen in MLS. That picture sums it up perfectly.

For those of us who have been watching Castillo regularly for past few years, these past couple months have been quite a coming out party. In the past he would constantly beat players out wide with pace, but the decision making and the final ball were severely lacking once he got to the end line. Recently he’s shown a confidence to cut back and take players on in front of goal, and it’s been fun to watch.

  • Raymon

Jon Busch deserves some credit for all the rebounds he coughed up, including 3 that led to goals.

  • User222

he could be called up but Columbia is loaded, I mean, Falcao, James, Cuadrado, and lots of upcoming young players, etc….

can the US give Castillo citizenship?
