The U-17 U.S. Men’s National Team brought a little bit of pride back to their team as they closed out the group stage at the Open Nordic Tournament.

In the USA’s final group stage match in the Denmark-hosted tournament, the U-17s thrashed the Faroe Islands, 4-0, to earn a spot in the fifth-place match against Finland on Saturday. McKenzie Gaines scored a brace for the USA in the victory.

Although they struggled to score in their opening matches against Norway and Denmark, the USA scored three times in the first 21 minutes to take control of the match. Dutch-American forward Kai Koreniuk scored the opening goal in the fourth minute of the match, followed by a pair of goals from Gaines in the 14th and 21st minutes.

Substitute Eric Matzelevich added a fourth goal for the USA in the 82nd minute with the game long out of reach for the Faroe Islands.

The U-17s will be playing two games on Saturday. First will be the fifth-place match of the Nordic Tournament against Finland, followed by a separate squad taking on China at the Copa Mexico de Naciones in Mexico City.

Here’s a look at the USA’s lineup from their win against the Faroe Islands:

  1. We keep selecting the same kids for the past 4-5 years. At that time most of these players were great, now many of them would not even start in a serious academy team.
These players at exception of Braima, and 2 others are probably the D team.
Some of these players are great playing USYSA soccer without a decent competition and still get called to represent the US.
    Go figure….

  2. Argentina withdrew from the Copa Mexico due to the death of Don Julio. The US U17s were suppose to play them on Sunday

    • I am not sure what you are trying to accomplish here. Would you rather the team have lost to the Faroe Islands? Be happy about the positive individual performances rather than hitting me with them negative waves so early in the morning.

      • They tied two youth teams in friendlies here, lost to Denmark, now beat Faroe. Whoop de do.

      • This is our B-/C team. Maybe only 3 or 4 of these players will get called in to the pre-qualification tournament camp.
