SBI MLS Rookie of the Week: Adam Bedell

Adam Bedell

By RYAN TOLMICH

Standing at a hulking 6-foot-7, Columbus Crew rookie Adam Bedell has the ability to change the game with just the flick of his head.

That is exactly what the 22-year-old forward did Saturday, as Bedell scored his second goal of the season in the Crew’s 3-0 victory over the Houston Dynamo at Crew Stadium.

With his side up 1-0 in the 59th minute, Bedell provided his side with an insurance goal by heading home a cross from forward Justin Meram. Bedell used his size to outmuscle Dynamo defender David Horst and flick home a close range header, giving his side breathing room for the Crew’s second win in as many weeks.

Bedell’s finish earned him SBI MLS Rookie of the Week, as the Crew forward beat out D.C. United’s Steve Birnbaum and FC Dallas’ Tesho Akindele for this week’s honors.

What did you think of Bedell’s performance? Who impressed you most in MLS Week 24?

  1. I’m a Crew fan and I agree with Ohioan. Crew have had some injuries (Arrieta) and I think the front office has just failed to address the need up front. Bedell should not be starting at this point. But I do agree that I hope he can carve out a career in MLS, and I see him as a very nice option off the bench. If you’re down a goal in the 75th minute, it’s nice to have a 6-foot-7 guy come in and make the defense sag into their own box even more. Really opens up the space in front of the defenders for other creative players, as well.

  2. Bedell is a squad player in the MLS. He works hard and is obviously a threat in the air, but his soccer IQ and creativity is below average for the league. If the CREW’s roster gets to where it needs to be he’ll be a third or fourth forward. Watching him come up through the Academy ranks and at Detroit, it seems like he has a good personality and is a really committed guy. I hope he can carve out a career in MLS, but he is not a starter or first choice reserve.

      • Yes, kudos to him for putting himself in the position to make the most of his opportunity. My point is that in the long run he is not the answer for the CREW.

Furthermore a related point is that the cream doesn’t always rise to the top in any profession – professional sports included. There are lots of factors that go in to who makes it or who gets fielded on a specific team at a certain time. My argument is that simply finding himself in the starting 11 says something about the state of the CREW’s roster at that position, and it would be a major failing for the franchise if they don’t address it before the next season.
