Three months after the two sides finished atop the Premier League table, reigning champions Manchester City and runners-up Liverpool clash in one of league’s biggest early season match-ups.
Liverpool enter Monday’s clash at the Etihad bearing news of the club’s latest addition, as the Reds completed the signing of Mario Balotelli Monday afternoon. The Italian will be unable to play against his former club, but Liverpool will still boast the scoring potential of Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling, each of whom scored in the Reds’ 2-1 victory over Southampton last time out.
Meanwhile, Man City are fresh off a victory of their own, with David Silva and Sergio Aguero each scoring to open the club’s title defense in a 2-0 victory over Newcastle last week.
In Spain, both Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid will kickoff their La Liga campaigns after Atletico knocked off their city rivals to claim the SuperCup this past Friday. The reigning La Liga champions will start their campaign with a trip to Rayo Vallecano, while Real Madrid host Cordoba in their opening contest.

Did you just see the highlights? City is class no doubt about it and did a great job of punishing Liverpool’s mistakes, but did not completely out play them.
You’re right that Liverpool could’ve changed the plot on a couple of occasions…. but to me city won comfortably. Liverpool really need to figure out how to produce a 90 min performance — seems everything is there to challenge for the highest honors, but more patient and consistent teams will continue to have the advantage in the high level showdowns
