Soccer Saturday: Your Running Commentary

Landon Donovan

By DAN KARELL

The battle for a playoff place in the Western Conference heats up on Saturday as the LA Galaxy host the Portland Timbers.

The Galaxy and Timbers are each full of talent but for one reason or another, have not been able to put together enough consistent performances this season. Both teams though are trying to build off morale boosting wins, with the Galaxy dominating the Seattle Sounders, 3-0, and the Timbers fighting back to defeat the Montreal Impact, 3-2.

In addition to the MLS action on Saturday, there are plenty of international friendlies occurring across the globe. This morning saw the first day of the Emirates Cup in England and Schalke 04 Cup in Germany, while the International Champions Cup continues with a four-game schedule. The day’s matches are highlighted by Real Madrid hosting Manchester United at “The Big House” in Ann Arbor, Mich.

A sold-out crowd of more than 109,000 is expected and the game will be shown live on FOX national television.

Liga MX, the North American Soccer League, and the National Women’s Soccer League are all in action this evening as well.

If you will be watching today’s action, please feel free to share your thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below.

FWIW, Gringo Torres looked reborn on the left wing last night.
Reports said he was playing well so far this season, last night was the first chance I got to see him.
I don’t speak Spanish but they said his name a lot.
Great wide open game to watch, and JFT was impressive

Much as I’m occasionally annoyed by LD’s shenanigans, I still love watching him play. I love, love, , love watching a great assist and that one was special.

+1 Watching the Galaxy play without him is excruciatingly dull… like working your way through a dry baked potato

I have been wondering how many games in history have had bigger crowds. Can’t be many.

Great, wide open match with the Revs/Bulls, but Miazga is just playing yet another flat out stupid match and he’s single handedly cost the match. Not sure what Petke can possibly be thinking. This kid is not even remotely ready for MLS. He jogged 5 yards away from Davies for 15 yards on CD9’s goal, not ever bothering to attempt to mark, leaving his man wide open on the far post. Now he’s gotten a straight red on an idiotic tackle on Nguyen 3 seconds after the ball was gone. Either the game is far too fast for him right now or he’s just not too bright.

Whoa!! Just as I was beginning to think Dax would never find his form again this season, the gigantic headed ginger leprechaun springs a rainbow chip right from the edge of the box right over the outstretched arms of Shuttleworth into the pot of gold. What a play.

Holy Cow!!! Ten man NYRB has just scored twice against NE with yet another beautiful BWP effort. Sam with a lovely chipped through ball to BWP who settles it and calmly curls an elegant left footer into the left side netting from the opposite side of the box.

Soccer can be a cruel game, SJ had no business winning that game but managed to hang on. Seattle in a bit of a mini slump at the moment, need to straighten things out quick

How could anyone say Casillas is not good anymore?? Iker has been one of the greatest goalkeepers I’ve ever seen, and has won more trophies than most ever will.

It’s true, lately he hasn’t been at his greatest form, and maybe it’s not a mistake to put him on the bench, but c’mon! Just grab a Youtube video and watch him act.. Pure class!
